About warty nevus
A warty nevus is a benign formation that is easily recognized by its bumpy surface. The latter in appearance resembles a cabbage head or a garland, covered with cracks and folds. The disease is mistakenly considered harmless, since in some cases birthmarks cause serious complications, including the development of a cancerous tumor. This anomaly is congenital and appears almost immediately after birth, but is sometimes diagnosed a little later.
- At first, a convex formation may be noticed on the child’s skin. With age, it darkens, acquires a brown or yellowish color, and remains with the person until the end of his life.
- It becomes more noticeable as the child grows older, and also increases in size. But it does not grow in width; the increase occurs due to the growth of the area of the epithelium that it occupies.
- Gradually, its surface becomes keratinized, and the nevus increases in height. If the top layer has been injured, you can notice that it has grown.
Verrucous (ichthyosoform, warty or keratotic) nevus is not a melanoma-hazardous formation and is characterized by medium transverse (1–3 cm) and pronounced longitudinal (up to 10 cm) dimensions, weak or moderate pigmentation, and elevation above the skin surface. Outwardly, it seems to consist of several papillomatous nevi, located closely to each other, merging into a single formation. Some figuratively call verrucous nevus cauliflower because of its external similarity.
