Celandine is a medicinal plant that has long been used to eliminate skin problems. Preparations based on this herb help get rid of calluses, growths and other defects, including papillomas and warts. Celandine-based products are sold in pharmacies without a prescription. Ointments, juice and herbal extract are used for medicinal purposes.
Healing properties
The plant belongs to the poppy family and has a perennial life cycle. Celandine has a straight, rounded stem, carved leaves and yellow flowers. The inflorescence is an umbrella. If you break the stem, you can see yellow juice. During the season, celandine can bloom up to 3 times. When the petals fly off, seed pods are formed. After ripening, the seeds spread over tens and hundreds of meters.
The Latin name of the herb is Chelidonium május, which translated into Russian means “swallow grass”. Other names for celandine by which it is popularly known:
- yellow milkweed;
- warthog;
- podtynnik.
It was not by chance that the grass received such names: people noticed that it grows near fences (tynov) and can get rid of warts. The healing properties of this species are due to the composition of the milky juice. The liquid is a mixture of several alkaloids of the isoquinoline subgroup. Each component of the milky juice has beneficial properties:
- chelerythrine acts as a local irritant;
- protopin calms, reduces the sensitivity of nerve endings, inhibits reactions;
- sanguinarine promotes the secretion of saliva, enhances peristalsis of the gastrointestinal tract;
- Chelidonine is close in structure and properties to morphine and papaverine;
- Homochelidonin is a convulsive poison that has a local anesthetic effect.
Celandine is a poisonous plant. Under no circumstances should it be consumed fresh. Failure to follow this recommendation may result in death. At the same time, the plant is capable of providing a powerful healing effect, which has been used by people for a long time. Defects that can be eliminated with the help of this herb:
- dry growths;
- skin tumors;
- condylomas;
- polyps;
- acne;
- warts;
- spines.
A decoction of the stems and leaves helps with skin itching and irritation; the milky juice cauterizes scratches and small wounds. By diluting the liquid in water, you can get a product for wiping irritated areas of the skin. The use of drugs based on celandine orally is allowed only with the permission of a doctor. As a rule, a pharmaceutical decoction is used, which has an antimicrobial and choleretic effect.
Preparation of raw materials
To make celandine tincture, take dried or freshly picked herbs. Fresh grass is collected as soon as it begins to bloom (from the beginning of summer).
Plants are cut away from roads. Dry in places protected from direct sunlight or in dryers.
Ready-made dry leaves and stems are crushed in various ways - ground, passed through a meat grinder or blender.

When working with plant raw materials, it is necessary to use protective equipment (gloves, cotton-gauze bandage) because celandine is poisonous.
Indications for use
The doctor will tell you in what form to use celandine. Usually he prescribes some kind of drug made from flowers or leaves. Method of application: external or internal, depending on the identified pathologies. Diseases for which medicines based on celandine are prescribed:
- tuberculosis of the skin and bones;

Tincture of celandine in alcohol is prepared from a 1:1 ratio, i.e. One part of alcohol is taken for one part of plant material.
Dried or fresh herb leaves are placed halfway in a 1-liter jar, then filled to the top with medical alcohol. The container with the tincture is placed in a dark place for 14 days. Shake the contents daily.
Celandine tincture with vodka is prepared in a similar way.Removal of tumors
Most often, celandine-based products are used to combat warts. Externally, the neoplasms resemble papillae. They don't hurt if you don't touch them, but they are unpleasant to look at and cause inconvenience. If you accidentally injure a wart, it may bleed. Over time, the number of growths increases, and some of them become larger. Treatment should be started as early as possible. The main danger is possible malignancy.
Treatment consists of regular treatment of warts. The growth must be lubricated with juice, milk or ointment. Frequency of treatments - up to 5 times a day. The procedure is carried out carefully, avoiding contact of the drug with healthy skin. You can prepare celandine ointment at home using the following recipe:
- 1 tsp. carbolic acid;
- 1 tbsp. l. fresh juice squeezed from leaves and stems;
- 4 tablespoons of Vaseline.
Instead of juice, you can put 2 tbsp. l. chopped fresh leaves. Vaseline can be replaced with animal fat, massage oil or baby cream. Celandine juice, similar to what is sold in pharmacies, can be prepared independently. For this purpose, leaves and young shoots are collected during the flowering period. The raw materials are ground in a blender or meat grinder, the mass is placed in a glass jar, covered with a lid and placed in a cool, dark place. After 3 days, juice will be released. It should be strained and refrigerated. To prepare 1.5 liters of juice you will need 10 liters of crushed raw materials.
Preparing the tincture
An infusion of celandine is prepared on an alcohol basis or on water; instead of medical alcohol, you can use vodka.
Pharmacy products
In urban areas it is difficult to find celandine in its natural form. It is best to buy ready-made drugs at the pharmacy, and you need to carefully study the composition. Some pharmaceutical products have names derived from the name of the plant, but they do not contain celandine.
Hydroxide-based preparation
An example of a medicine that does not contain plant components is the “Super Celandine” extract for fighting papillomas. This is a well-known remedy that effectively removes warts. There is no celandine in it in any form.
Composition of the drug:
- sodium hydroxide;
- distilled water;
- sodium bicarbonate;
- sodium chloride.
The product can be used at home and is sold in pharmacies without a prescription. Before use, you should carefully study the instructions.
Procedure for removing growth:
- healthy skin around the tumor is smeared with Vaseline or baby cream;
- steam the wart;
- apply a drop of liquid using an applicator;
- wait until the drug is well absorbed;
- if there is no burning sensation and the growth has not darkened, apply another drop and wait 15 minutes;
- wash the problem area with water.
This is how the wart is treated for 3 days. If the drug is used correctly, black spots appear on the surface of the growth. After 3-4 days the papilloma peels off, and on the 5th-10th day they start at 30-35 rubles.
Do not use the product to remove warts located on the genitals, neck and face. It is not allowed to treat the growth without smearing the skin around it with a rich cream. Avoid contact of the chemical with the eyes, nose, and mouth. In case of accidental inhalation or ingestion, rinse mucous membranes and skin with warm water for 10 minutes.
What are warts
Warts are benign growths on the surface of the skin. The reason for their occurrence is a weakening of the human immune system.

- Papillomas are neoplasms on the skin of various types of human papillomaviruses (HPV). In most cases they are benign,
- condylomas – occur on the mucous membrane of the genital organs and must be removed,
