Girls often resort to using gelatin to prepare face and hair masks. And before we post the main recipes for their creation, we will tell you a little about the preparation of this substance.
Before any use, be it cooking or cosmetics, gelatin is diluted in water. The powder is poured with water (juice or milk), in a ratio of 5 to 1 (1 part gelatin, 5-8 parts water). It quickly absorbs all the liquid, then is heated until a homogeneous liquid mass is formed - the basis for creating a product such as a gelatin face mask.
The ingredients included in gelatin are able to eliminate pigment and age spots from the face, while the effect of gelatin is gentle and soft.
If you want to get a whitening effect, you can add lemon, lime or kiwi juice to the mask. These fruits are good for the skin, you can buy them in any supermarket, they are not expensive, but their effectiveness is comparable to expensive drugs.
Gelatin is not recommended to be used constantly, so if you want to periodically care for your skin, we recommend paying attention to raspberry face masks. They are suitable for everyone who is not allergic to this berry.

How to make a gelatin face mask
There are several proportions. Below you will find two main recipes. Each of them has its own action and consistency.
Cleansing gelatin film masks for the face
Mix gelatin and water in a 1:2 ratio. Measure – tablespoon. Fill with filtered or mineral water. Leave for 10 minutes. Place in the microwave for 8-10 seconds or in a water bath. It is important that it does not boil. Mix well and cool to a comfortable body temperature. Apply for 20-25 minutes until dry and remove the film.
This composition turns into film very quickly. At the same time, it has a bright drying and exfoliating property. And therefore suitable for oily and problematic skin. But it is not suitable for dry and sensitive people.
Nourishing, firming, moisturizing
Instead of water, milk or cream is more suitable, and the thicker the better. We dilute in a ratio of 1:5 (gelatin-milk). The composition is softer, less drying, and releases more collagen. The mask is prepared in a similar way. Let the main element swell. If you can’t mix it into a homogeneous consistency, heat it in a water bath or in the microwave for 8-10 seconds. For skin prone to inflammation, you can use herbal decoctions instead of milk. For example, chamomile, sage, calendula.
Additional ingredients can be added to both the first and second compositions to enhance the desired properties. Recipes for any occasion are below.
How to remove a gelatin face mask?
An important question for those whose mask is wet or does not harden. The answer is simple. It is necessary to soak it with a cosmetic sponge dipped in milk. Or apply oil/moisturizing milk on top, and the film can be washed off after a while.
If force majeure did not arise, and the mask simply turned into a solid film. It is removed from the bottom up.

What are the benefits of gelatin for the skin?
1) Increases collagen production
Increasing the structural protein collagen is the main reason why most acne patients turn to gelatin first, as it increases collagen and treats acne. Basically, collagen is a protein that forms the building block in the skin - the matrix, around which all other cells gather.
Boosting collagen is amazing for treating acne and other skin problems:
1) accelerates the healing of dead pimples;
2) protects the skin from inflammation and free radicals;
3) improves overall skin tone and hydration.
Collagen is the main protein for the skin along with keratin. It is found in the body in joints, connective tissue and the membranes of internal organs. The same goes for animals.
The body makes collagen from the amino acids glycine and proline, as well as some vitamin C to help guide this process. If the level of these components is insufficient, collagen production is low and the skin begins to suffer.
Since gelatin contains 21% glycine by weight, it is great at boosting collagen levels and works wonders on skin tone, skin hydration, acne, etc. Meanwhile, it also contains 12% proline by weight, which prevents the loss of pre-existing collagen in skin.
2) Experimental evidence of increased collagen production
Gelatin has shown real miracles regarding collagen levels. One study conducted in 2009 examined the effects of a gelatin supplement on women over 40 years of age. Women consumed 5 or 10 g for 7 weeks.
At the three-week mark, 41% of women who took 5g of gelatin reported that their skin had improved and 62% of women who took 10g every day reported the same.
After 7 weeks, 74% of women (5g) reported clear improvement in their skin, and 81% of women (10g) had more radiant, firmer skin.
Next we have a study from Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology that examined the touted anti-aging effects of gelatin in mice. The mice were divided into two groups: some took gelatin, while others took nothing.
Mice that did not consume gelatin lost 53% of the collagen in their skin when exposed to UV light. And mice that ate gelatin saw a significant 17% increase in collagen levels, even when they were exposed to ultraviolet light. Researchers have concluded that gelatin in the diet is essential for the treatment of many skin diseases, because it can resist the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays on the skin.
This means glycine can protect against free radicals, acne, and long-term sun exposure. In addition, gelatin increases vitamin D levels (critical in treating acne) so that we can tan in the sun without flaring up acne.
Another remarkable property is that it slows down aging. Aging is caused by many factors, from free radical damage to cells to shortening of telomeres in genes, but a widespread factor is the persistent decline of collagen after age 25.
Gelatin moisturizes the skin, makes it smooth, and therefore makes chemical moisturizers completely unnecessary. Many moisturizers make acne appear blotchy and inflamed, but complexion as well as smoothness can be improved simply by increasing collagen production through a megadose of gelatin and vitamin C.
3) Increases glutathione levels
Glutathione improves the appearance of the skin and prevents the formation of acne. One little-known power of gelatin is to provide the building blocks for the production of all important glutathione molecules.
Glutathione is the most common antioxidant that the body produces itself. It cuts off free radical chains on the skin, cleanses the body of free radicals and prevents the depletion of important anti-acne vitamins E and A.
Glutathione binds to heavy metals such as mercury and removes them from the bloodstream. It is because of this detoxifying property that people now have lower glutathione levels than ever. Chemicals, pesticides, carcinogenic herbicides such as glyphosate and heavy metals such as arsenic accumulate in the environment at a high rate, and glutathione is depleted 50% faster.
Acne-prone skin contains 20% less glutathione, which means that the decrease in antioxidant activity caused by a decrease in the amount of glutathione plays an important role in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris.
Glutathione is made from three amino acids: cysteine, glutamine and glycine. Gelatin is a source of glycine in the human diet. Without glycine, we only get minimal amounts of glutathione from the scarce glycine that the liver produces.
Another common food for increasing glutathione is whey protein, which contains both glycine and glutamine. However, many acne patients do not understand the role gelatin plays in the skin. Almost all acne patients focus on increasing collagen, but glutathione is just as important.
4) Improves sleep quality
Glycine is well known for its calming effects on the brain. In the nervous system it acts as a strong inhibitory neurotransmitter. The stress hormone cortisol can act on certain transmitters that distract you, but the amino acid glycine distracts cortisol until it is needed.
Glycine is able to penetrate the brain barrier and alters neurotransmitters in the brain by stimulating N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors. This stimulation is thought to have two key effects on sleep: it suppresses muscle activity during REM sleep and lowers the body's core temperature to facilitate sleep.
Glycine increases levels of serotonin, which provides the building blocks of the sleep hormone melatonin and promotes normal circadian rhythm. Regarding anxious thoughts during stress, one study found that one pinch of glycine powder under the tongue provided immediate relief from incessant overthinking.
3 g of glycine before bed significantly reduces sleep onset time, relieves fatigue and causes a good feeling after waking up.
This suggests that repair processes are more effective, which helps acne heal faster. Glycine also relieves almost all the unpleasant symptoms of insomnia: eye strain, morning fatigue, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, and also improves memory.
Glycine has been positively tested in the treatment of schizophrenia. It promotes the proper functioning of neurotransmitters in drug addicts and prevents their relapse.
If glycine helps you fall asleep faster, then gelatin can easily do the same. But why is gelatin so important for the skin? Because poor sleep is one of the causes of acne. The skin looks gray and tired after poor sleep, and with constant lack of sleep, the skin becomes oily, pimples and blackheads appear.
Gelatin is a great start to improving your sleep quality and getting rid of acne. Some people don't even know that glycine deficiency can be the source of all sleep problems.
5) Anti-inflammatory agent
Gelatin reduces inflammation and clears acne from the skin. It was recommended by Erich Kohn back in 1905 for the treatment of “intestinal catarrh,” an inflammation of the mucous membrane now known as enteritis. This substance has a long history of treating a variety of health problems associated with inflammation in the digestive system.
Gelatin lines the lining of the intestinal tract, protecting it from inflammatory chemicals and any harmful bacteria and yeast like candida. But how does reducing digestive inflammation help treat acne? Reduces the risk of food allergies, improves nutrient absorption and prevents leaky gut syndrome.
Research shows that gelatin treats intestinal inflammation:
- Gelatin protects the intestines from oxidative damage, and therefore from the inflammatory disease that is associated with acne.
- Glycine selectively protects the small intestine during subacute endotoxemia, even after severe systemic failure has occurred. Because it is nontoxic at low doses, administration of a moderate dose of glycine (50 to 100 mg/kg) is useful in preventing intestinal damage in sepsis.
- Eating more gelatin restores the absorptive capacity of the small intestine in rats whose intestines have been damaged by a high-fructose diet.
- The protective effect on intestinal epithelial cells is critical for the absorption of important nutrients in acne and prevents inflammatory reactions in the bloodstream.
- Gelatin can reduce inflammation that causes acne throughout the body. Chronic inflammation is a condition where the immune system is overactive and damages tissue throughout the body, including the skin of the face. Chronic inflammation is the number one cause of acne.
- Glycine can control sepsis, adult respiratory distress syndrome, arthritis, and many other conditions associated with inflammation and acne.
- Glycine, together with lactoferrin, has a noticeable anti-inflammatory effect on skin inflammation. Scientists have concluded that this is a new treatment option for chronic inflammatory diseases, including acne.
- Cysteine, histidine, and glycine significantly inhibit NF-KappaB, a master molecule that activates the release of many inflammatory chemicals in acne. Glycine also inhibits the inflammatory chemical interleukin-6, which is noticeably higher in acne-prone skin.
- Multiple protective effects make gelatin a promising strategy for treating inflammatory diseases. In recent years, evidence has emerged in favor of the anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and cytoprotective effects of the simplest L-glycine. How does it work? Scientists aren't sure, but they believe it acts directly on inflammatory cells such as macrophages, inhibiting the activation of transcription factors and the production of inflammatory cytokines.
Cleansing gelatin face masks at home
Gelatin face masks at home can be made in such a consistency that a thick film is obtained. It will penetrate well into the pores, cleansing and pulling out all impurities. These masks are well suited for oily, problem and combination skin. Moreover, with the latter type, you can apply the composition only to oilier areas.
The simplest cucumber
- medium cucumber, gelatin
Grate the cucumber and extract the juice from it. Take in equal proportions and mix. The usual measure is 1 tbsp. Mix well and leave to swell. Then heat it in the microwave for 8-10 seconds. Apply the mask evenly, leave until dry and remove the film from bottom to top. We evaluate the result.
Scrub mask
- oatmeal or flour (1 tbsp), lemon juice (2 tbsp), water (2-3 tbsp), gelatin (2 tbsp)
You should have the consistency of thick sour cream. To do this, first dissolve the gelatin in water, then add the remaining ingredients in a water bath.
