Mustard face masks - recipes for wrinkles and acne

A little history

One of the most famous folk remedies for combating skin and hair imperfections, which can be found in many kitchens, is mustard.
But not in the sauce water, which is stored in refrigerators, but in the form of a yellow fine powder. Mustard itself has been known since 3000 BC. in India: its seeds were used in many recipes. The use of diluted mustard, which is similar to the one we are used to, dates back to 42 AD. In Ancient Greece and Rome, the seasoning was not particularly loved, but in Europe it was very loved. Already in the 9th century, French monasteries made good money from its production, the kings of the country had personal suppliers, and Pope John XXII in the 14th century added mustard to all dishes.

At first, mustard was used in the form of seeds of the plant of the same name, then they began to grind and mix with water, vinegar, sugar, salt and vegetable oil. To add new shades of taste, white wine, honey, caramel syrup, apple juice and even whole pieces of fruit are added to the sauce. The seasoning is especially popular in Russian and German cuisines, although in Europe mustard is very different from Russian: it is less spicy, almost sweet.

In Russia, since the 18th century, mustard has been grown in the village of Sarepta (now part of the Krasnoarmeysky district of Volgograd). There is still a Sarepta variety of mustard, which is called “Russian mustard” - the most evil and pungent in taste.

An interesting fact is that already at the end of the 18th century in Russia mustard was used during rubbing for leg and arm cramps. Its warming properties were well known to local doctors, and they often prescribed mustard plasters for colds and illnesses.

But for women, of greater interest is the fact that mustard can not only be added during cooking with a variety of meat dishes, but also used for its beauty. Thanks to its pungency, the seasoning increases appetite, suppresses the secretion of gastric juice and promotes faster digestion. It also contains substances that can break down fats, so you can carry out body wraps with mustard as part of the mixture.

Mustard is also good for destroying pathogenic microbes and fungi; it inhibits the development of inflammation, so it can be used for toothache and inflammation of the respiratory system. And, of course, mustard plasters are still the best way to warm up during viral diseases.

Today in cosmetology, mustard is primarily known as an active ingredient in a mask for hair growth. Many rave reviews give the mask almost magical properties.

The secret of the mustard mask is simple: hot mustard warms up the scalp, increasing blood flow to the bulbs, which contributes to their more active nutrition and awakening of dormant roots. But at the same time there is a positive side and a negative one: mustard is a fairly active element that you should be careful with.

Mustard is also used to prepare face masks because it is a very active substance that gives a quick visible effect.

Mustard composition

And a little more pleasant: in addition to warmth, mustard has many beneficial properties that will help in the struggle for perfection. Mustard contains vitamins A, B, and D - it moisturizes, rejuvenates, tones and helps get rid of acne. This is due to the main property of the seasoning: thanks to heating, blood flows faster to the skin, helping it renew and tighten. The essential oils that make up mustard soothe, unsaturated fatty acids normalize metabolic processes and dry it out. A mask for dry skin can be applied through a gauze base until your face gets used to it. Be extremely careful: mustard burns easily. For any skin type, do not use the mask too often.

Tips for using mustard masks

Tips on using mustard masks will also not be useless. The fact is that mustard is a rather potent ingredient and, if basic safety rules are not followed, there is a risk of harming the skin. Therefore, it’s worth starting with contraindications.

Mustard face masks are contraindicated for women with sensitive skin. The fact is that despite the presence of soothing components, mustard masks still cause irritation and redness of the skin. This in itself is not scary, the redness quickly disappears, and the face becomes cleaner and more beautiful. However, sensitive skin may react less favorably to heating. Mustard is also contraindicated for those who have signs of rosacea, as heating can aggravate the skin condition.

You should use mustard face masks on dry skin with caution. It is better to use a gauze or cloth napkin for this purpose, in which holes are made for the eyes, mouth and nose. The mask is first applied to a napkin, and then the napkin is applied to the skin. And in general, it makes sense to do a small mustard tolerance test. A small amount of the mask should be applied to the skin of the wrist and monitor the reaction.

Now directly about how to properly make mustard masks. First of all, only mustard powder can be used as a raw material, and not ready-made sauce. The timing of using the mask is also equally important. Of course, the time is individual for each mask; it usually ranges between 3 and 8 minutes, and almost never exceeds 10. You should not violate these recommendations, as you can get a very real skin burn. Also, you should not use mustard masks more than once every 10 days.

Since after such treatment the skin retains a red tint for some time, it is better to make mustard masks before bed. It’s unlikely that you want to go out in public with a flushed face.

After mustard masks, it is recommended to make a nourishing mask. Thanks to the effects of mustard, the nutritional effect increases significantly.

Features of preparing a mustard face mask

When preparing masks, you need to use only dry mustard, which must be diluted in water or other liquid. Table liquid mustard is not suitable. You need to apply the mask to a clean, washed face, rinse off the mask with plain water, without using any cosmetics. If you have normal or combination skin, you can lubricate it with olive oil or nourishing cream before applying the mask. This will avoid dryness and irritation. After the mustard mask, you can make a nourishing, moisturizing or soothing mask, depending on your skin problems.

Precautionary measures

When using mustard-based hair masks, you need to consider the following contraindications:

  • Allergic reaction to mustard. Before the procedure, it is necessary to conduct a test - apply mustard powder mixed with water to your hand and monitor the reaction.
  • The presence of fungal diseases of the scalp, seborrhea, lichen. Even small wounds or rashes can become inflamed from the “burning” mustard mixture.
  • People suffering from asthma, psoriasis and high blood pressure should also not wear such masks.
  • Also, the mask should not be used during pregnancy and lactation.
