DIY sugar body scrub: 7 best recipes

Most people have regular white sugar in their kitchen. And it can be an excellent component for preparing a sweet body scrub. Scientists and doctors have long been trumpeting the dangers of eating this product. But when used externally, everything changes: a dangerous sweetness turns into a friend that can restore a healthy and toned appearance to the skin. It’s quite easy to prepare a sugar body scrub with your own hands; there are dozens of recipes to suit every taste and budget.

Why Sugar Scrub is Ideal for the Body

Sugar is a source of glycolic acid, which increases the production of new cells and breaks down the protein that holds dead cells in the body. As a result of using sugar scrubs, the skin becomes unusually smooth and radiant, like a baby’s. Most sugar scrubs are also suitable for use on the face. But since different recipes may include essential oils, lemon and other allergenic products, it is always recommended to test the finished scrub on a small area of skin. Apply the product to the crook of your elbow, for example, and wait 24 hours before applying it to most of your body or face.

The Forest Fairy blog already has an article about the main principles of making homemade body scrubs: Making a body scrub with your own hands .
There you will learn about the role and different types of exfoliants, base oils and aromas in scrubs, and also receive several recipes based on coffee, salt, sugar, honey and oatmeal. Next, we will look at the features of sugar scrubs and their best recipes.

Why is a scrub needed and how to use it correctly

Cleansing the skin with products containing abrasive particles is not done every day, it is not necessary. The scrub should be used 2 or 3 times a week, depending on your lifestyle and skin type.

With one cosmetic product you can achieve the following results:

  1. Deep cleansing of the upper layer of the epidermis. Our cells work without interruption: sweat and fat glands secrete a secretion (this is fat and sweat), which mixes with dust and remains on the surface. This happens regardless of whether a person leads an active lifestyle or not. Even in a state of rest, cells continue their work. Soap alone is not enough to care for the skin of the body; it can only remove the top layer of impurities, and a dense film of fat will remain “lying” and prevent the pores from breathing. Various scrubs are intended for deep cleansing of the skin.
  2. In addition to nutrition, the scrub will help moisturize the skin and saturate it with useful substances. If you use a product based on oil plus vitamins, then in this way you can not only thoroughly cleanse the skin, but also moisturize it and nourish it with useful components.
  3. High-quality cleansing of the skin from dead particles is especially important for teenagers, because the cells actively produce sebum and sweat. If the skin is not cleansed, then certain areas of the body become rough, these places darken.
  4. Using a scrub, you can give a light body massage and improve blood circulation. In this way, the restoration processes of metabolism in the body are activated, and fat deposits do not accumulate. A scrub can be a real salvation for girls who struggle with cellulite and stretch marks.
  5. A scrub is a unique product that simultaneously cleanses the skin, nourishes, moisturizes and also tones. The ideal option is a sugar scrub; it is suitable for any skin type and copes well with the tasks.

How to make a body scrub from sugar at home

The main ingredient of any sugar scrub, in addition to the sugar itself, is the base oil. Most often this is coconut or olive oil, although some other oils have a lighter texture - almond, safflower, grape seed, etc. They moisturize the skin well without making it oily. In any case, you should like the aroma and how you feel after using the scrub.

A few more tips on how to properly make and use a sugar scrub:

  • Use this scrub 1-2 times a week;
  • Since it contains natural ingredients, store your homemade scrub in the refrigerator;
  • Adding dried herbs, clay, crushed seeds and pieces of fruit will make any scrub recipe even more useful and interesting;
  • Replacing fresh fruits with essential oils will allow your scrub to last much longer;
  • Depending on the type and fat content of the oil you use, you may need to slightly adjust the following proportions of ingredients (the ideal consistency is like wet sand on the beach);
  • You can freeze almost any product from the list below using ice molds and use it as an original ice body scrub;
  • Homemade scrubs containing fresh fruit, herbs, water or aloe vera can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. Dry herbs, extracts and essential oils, on the contrary, extend the shelf life to 1-3 months.

Without further delay, we present to you the best sugar scrub recipes according to the Forest Fairy blog:

Who should not use body scrubs, including those with sugar?

The procedure for applying a scrub in some cases carries both benefits and harm to the body. It is worth postponing the idea if:

  • The skin is very sensitive. Solid particles can damage the skin and even leave scratches
  • The skin is irritated after shaving or has open wounds. Scrubbing will only make existing problems worse.
  • There is a period of pregnancy or breastfeeding. Most often, peeling recipes contain fairly strong allergens that can harm the child.
  • There is a tendency to allergic reactions. In this case, it is necessary to carry out a test application of the mass on the wrist.
  • The body was badly sunburned. You need to give your body a couple of weeks to recover.
  • Phlebeurysm. The use of scrubs is possible for mild varicose veins, but with fine abrasives and light rubbing. If the veins are noticeably dilated, consultation with a specialist is necessary.

If all the prohibitions are not relevant, you can safely deal with the question of how to properly use sugar polishing.

Matcha tea sugar scrub recipe

Green tea is rich in vitamins and antioxidants, which you could read about in our article The benefits of green tea for the body . It also has a pleasant smell, which will give you even more pleasure from the procedures.

Required ingredients:

  • 1.5 tbsp. sugar (brown in the original recipe);
  • 2 tsp. matcha green tea;
  • 2 bags of green tea without additives or flavorings;
  • 1 tbsp. coconut oil (can be replaced with any other oil of your choice or even a mixture of oils, for example, 0.5 tbsp coconut and 0.25 tbsp safflower).

One variation of the recipe also uses 10 drops of bergamot essential oil, which gives the scrub the scent of Earl Gray tea. However, this oil reacts to sunlight, so this version of the scrub will need to be washed off well and not used before tanning.

Brew the tea bags with a glass of hot water and let cool. In a separate bowl, mix all other ingredients. When the tea has cooled, start pouring it into the mixture little by little. You should stop when the consistency of the scrub resembles wet sand from the beach.

If you don't want to brew tea, you can add it dry. Then your homemade body scrub will be even more useful and fragrant, but it will need to sit a little in the refrigerator. The lack of water will also allow the scrub to last longer (provided you use a clean spoon during procedures).

The author of the original recipe claims that this scrub is great for cellulite!

What types of scrubs are there?

Any cosmetic product, whether store-bought or homemade, consists of tiny particles or abrasives. These can be: salt or sugar crystals, crushed grape, almond or apricot seeds, as well as synthetic fiber, silicone granules and even fine sand. All these abrasive particles will help cleanse the skin of impurities better than regular soap or shower gel.

Scrubs are different: oil or water. In the first case, the main components are oil and abrasive (sugar, salt, crushed coffee beans, grape, apricot or olive seeds). Oils are used as a base: synthetic or natural. The consistency of the scrub may vary, depending on the percentage of oils and abrasive particles. This scrub is more suitable not only for deep cleansing the skin, but also for moisturizing. Used in professional massage rooms and spa salons.

Oil-free scrubs are light and contain a little essential oil or a mixture of oils. Abrasive particles, natural and artificial: silicone, synthetics, cellulose. A light scrub is suitable for cleansing dry and sensitive skin.

  • 5 drops grapefruit essential oil (optional);
  • 1 tbsp. l. grated zest.

  • wooden spoon;
  • ceramic bowl;
  • glass jar with lid.

What is a scrub for?

Let's start with the fact that a scrub is a means for exfoliating and renewing the skin. This happens thanks to the solid particles of the exfoliant in the composition.

In order for a scrub to have a beneficial effect on the skin in several ways, it must contain moisturizing oils and plant extracts. These active ingredients will help the skin recover after mechanical exfoliation. Phytobanya body scrub from the Clean Line brand contains pine nut oil. It will not only provide hydration to the body's skin, but will also contribute to its rejuvenation, since this oil is rich in vitamin E and Omega fatty acids.

Body scrubs provide the care your skin needs:

— intensively cleanse the skin; — level its relief; - provide softness and shine; - free from dead cells; — help ensure that the active substances of creams and lotions actively penetrate the epidermis.

What beneficial properties does the product have?

A homemade sugar scrub is a good helper in the fight against acne, cellulite, and stretch marks. It eliminates the consequences of past skin diseases (psoriasis, dermatitis), nourishes and moisturizes the epidermis.

Thanks to its unique composition, sugar provides positive effects for both the face and body.

For body

A “sweet” scrub, prepared independently from natural ingredients, is used to care for problem areas of the body. This helps to take care of your skin carefully.

  1. Relief improvement. Regular use of a sugar-based exfoliator can make stretch marks, cellulite, and scars less noticeable. Blood flow to problem areas improves, which helps burn excess fat.
  2. Normalization of lymph and blood circulation. Due to the flow of blood to the surface of the epidermis, its color improves, tone and elasticity appear. The effect is achieved through light massage movements and soft scrubbing.
  3. Tightening effect. Sugar is a good helper in the fight for youthful skin. It provides a natural lifting effect and makes problem areas tightened.
  4. Protective functions. You can use the product on your elbows and heels - after several uses, a protective film will form on them. Thanks to it, these areas will remain soft, roughness and darkening will disappear.

A soft scrub based on a sweet component is suitable for use on any type of epidermis. It is recommended to apply it to previously cleaned areas using a special massage brush or mitten.

For face

Homemade sugar facial scrub becomes a good alternative to store-bought cosmetics, the composition of which leaves much to be desired. The grains gradually dissolve during use, making the procedure soft and harmless even for sensitive skin.

  1. Complete care. After using the scrub, the face becomes soft and velvety, and a natural glow appears.
  2. Normalization of sebum secretion. Regular use of a natural product helps normalize the functioning of the sebaceous glands. The balance between oily and dry areas is restored, and impurities are effectively removed from the pores.
  3. Tightening effect. Sugar is an indispensable product for home care for aging skin. It provides good lifting: eliminates facial and deep wrinkles, smoothes the relief.
  4. Elimination of comedones. Many skin diseases and the appearance of blackheads are associated with poor pore cleansing. Remains of sebum and dust contribute to inflammation of the sebaceous glands; impurities can only be removed by regular scrubbing.
  5. Rejuvenating effect. Sugar contains a valuable substance - glycolic acid, which eliminates age spots. It helps accelerate regeneration processes - removes dead cells, and young, soft skin appears in their place.
  6. High-quality hydration. Restoring hydrobalance is an important part of facial care. Complete hydration is the key to youthful epidermis. The product contains valuable oils that help retain valuable moisture inside cells, thus slowing down the natural aging process.

Sugar scrub 3in1

This recipe is more interesting; to make such a scrub at home, you need to prepare well, namely, purchase a soap base in advance. It is sold in specialized soap making stores, and this component can also be ordered in an online store.

What you need to prepare in advance:

  • soap base (ideally made in England) – 80 g;
  • vegetable oil of grape seeds, jojoba or wheat germ - 2 tbsp;
  • sugar (any, white or cane) – 200 g;
  • vitamin E – 5 drops;
  • food coloring (optional) – a few drops;
  • fragrance or essential oil – 2-3 drops.

You will also need: a rolling pin, cookie cutters, a plastic bag.

This recipe is slightly adapted, because if you make a sugar scrub according to the standard recipe (this is 1 part soap base, 1 oil and 3 sugar), the scrub turns out loose and greasy.

How to make a scrub yourself:

  1. Cut a piece of soap base with a knife.
  2. You can melt it in a water bath or in a microwave oven, only then it is important not to miss the moment so that the base does not run away.
  3. Quickly add dye to the hot soap base (if we want to do this). If something bothers you, you can add 2 drops of olive oil, it gives a beautiful yellowish tint. If you brew madder, you can get a scrub shade ranging from delicate pink to rich red. An oil solution of Chlorophyllipt (sold in pharmacies) gives a beautiful greenish tint.
  4. When the base has cooled slightly, add sugar in small portions and mix. It is better not to add sugar to a hot base, because it will dissolve and you will need a fresh portion. Mix the mixture quickly; it will be thick.
  5. Place the entire mass on a pre-prepared plastic bag (lay it out on the table in 2 layers). The mass turns out crumbly and loose. You need to wrap it in a bag and knead it with your hands. This is necessary so that the grains of sugar combine with the soap base. You will see for yourself how it will become soft and flexible.
  6. Now you can take a rolling pin and roll out the mass like dough.
  7. After rolling, remove the top layer of polyethylene and use cookie cutters to press the shapes.
  8. Leave the figures on the table for 3-5 hours.

It turns out to be soap, scrub and an excellent moisturizer at the same time. For 1 application you will need 1 sugar bar.

How to choose the right scrub

The main active element of scrubs are solid microparticles, which exfoliate the skin. There are particles of natural and synthetic origin: the choice depends on skin type and individual preferences.

— Silica particles are spherical: less likely to scratch and damage the skin. Suitable for sensitive skin, as well as for delicate areas: the abdomen and inner surface of the arms. — Sea salt and sugar crystals are often used as natural exfoliants. They are ideal for body skin, as they are quite large in size, but quickly dissolve in water, thereby limiting the time for an exfoliating massage. — Elements of crushed peach and apricot seeds are natural microparticles that are recommended for use in anti-cellulite procedures and on the bends of the limbs (elbows, knees) with rough skin.

The Clean Line Massage Effect Body Scrub contains apricot kernels, which help cleanse the skin and create an anti-cellulite massage effect. The scrub smoothes the skin and improves microcirculation, preparing the skin for the application of corrective care products.

In addition to exfoliating components, scrubs may include the following caring ingredients:

— Oils (olive, flaxseed, fruit seed, jojoba) help moisturize the skin during the scrub application. — Allantoin, panthenol ¬– caring ingredients that help compensate for the effect of exfoliant on the skin. — Specialized components: vitamins, plant extracts, antioxidants. Such elements help maintain the skin's natural ability to renew and restore.

Citrus perfection

Fruit acid in a sugar facial scrub can deeply cleanse pores, refresh and tone the skin:

  • 1 medium orange;
  • 2 tbsp. l. sour cream with the required fat content (depending on skin type);
  • 3 tbsp. l. granulated sugar.

Peel one medium orange and grind it in a blender. Add sour cream here. Beat the mixture again. Gradually add sugar, stirring by hand, and immediately apply to facial skin. Massage for 6-8 minutes.

Then leave on the surface for only 2-3 minutes, allowing citrus acid to “break down” the keratinized upper layer of the epidermis. At the end of the procedure, rinse with warm water.

When should it not be used?

Of course, a scrub, like any cosmetic product, has its contraindications. First of all, it should not be used if you are individually intolerant to the components. In addition, scrubbing is contraindicated in the following cases:

  • in the presence of dermatological diseases;
  • in the presence of infectious rashes, all kinds of inflammations, ulcers, wounds and scratches;
  • you use self-tanning or lightening cosmetics (may cause pigmentation);
  • your skin is sunburned (in this case, it cannot be torn off, you need to use special healing and soothing agents);
  • you had surgery (the scrub will interfere with the normal healing of scars);
  • you are going to do a chemical peel (pre-scrubbing can irritate the skin so much that after peeling a burn or inflammation forms);
  • in the presence of insect bites (the scrub can spread the affected area throughout the body).

The scrub perfectly helps to cleanse and exfoliate the skin, but you need to use it wisely: do not overuse procedures, treat different areas of the body with care, and do not forget about possible contraindications.

Contraindications to the use of scrub

The procedure cannot be performed if you have the following skin problems:

  • presence of a feeling of tightness of the skin on the face;
  • a feeling of itching and irritation on the skin during the procedure;
  • damage to the skin of the face;
  • acne;
  • inflamed and sunburned facial skin;
  • allergic reactions;
  • rosacea on the face.

There is no need to use a scrub that is intended for body care to cleanse your face, because... it contains larger abrasive particles.

Sensitive, thin and dry skin

For sensitive and thin skin, the mechanical action of the scrub is too aggressive and easily causes redness, irritation, damage and hypersensitivity of the skin.

Dry skin naturally lacks a protective barrier and is therefore susceptible to injury and moisture loss. Large, sharp exfoliating particles of scrubs and harsh surfactants (surfactants, such as sulfates) further disrupt the epidermal barrier, damage and dry the skin.

For dry, thin and sensitive skin, the best exfoliating option is gentle gommages. They act as delicately as possible and do not damage the skin. We will soon talk about gommages in a separate post.

If you can’t give up scrubs, look for creamy products with soft round particles, oils, softening and moisturizing ingredients. They will smooth out the effect of scrubbing particles and protect delicate facial skin from drying out. The optimal choice of scrubbing particles is jojoba granules, oatmeal and honey.
