How to treat a white pimple on the eyelid

Description, diagnosis, clinical manifestations

White pimples in the immediate vicinity of the mucous membrane of the eye - most often these are so-called milia or millea. These rashes have the following character: pimples of dense consistency, small in size (no larger than a match head), white or cloudy-transparent in color. Visually, the bubbles resemble a drop of liquid frozen on the skin.

First, one barely noticeable pimple appears on the eyelid. If no measures are taken to eliminate it in a timely manner, the number of white pimples near the eye increases, and several more pimples pop up in a fairly short period of time. They are localized in close proximity to each other, forming a group that looks like millet grains - hence the second name - millet.

Also, each individual bubble becomes larger in size. They can be located on both the upper and lower eyelids, or on the skin near the outer part of the eye. Milia are classified as acne. Their nature is the accumulation of fatty secretions under the skin. The inflammatory process is not typical for such a rash, it does not cause pain, and is not considered a contagious disease.

Millet is often an aesthetic problem. However, cosmetologists advise taking care of the rashes as soon as possible. Indeed, often behind a visual defect lies a much more serious reason associated with disturbances in the functioning of internal organs.

Regardless of the gender and age of the patient, when acne appears in the eye area, a diagnosis is necessary, which is carried out by a dermatologist. To do this, urine and blood tests are performed, cholesterol levels are checked, and in some cases a microbiological examination and a pimple smear may be necessary.

What is this

A white pimple on the eyelid or in the eye area is the so-called millet or milia. In fact, it is a kind of white eel, no larger in size than a match head and quite dense to the touch. It is not classified as an infectious disease and is therefore not considered contagious to others.

Usually, milia is a painless rash, but from an aesthetic point of view it is a cosmetic defect. In appearance, such a pimple resembles a drop of cream left on the skin. It attracts the attention of others, so it is advisable to get rid of it.

Causes

It is quite difficult to independently find out the cause of white or transparent pimples near the eyes. When the first bubbles appear on the eyelids, you should consult a specialist, especially if these formations are accompanied by pain, itching, redness of the skin or mucous membrane of the visual organ.

Diagnostics in this case is necessary; it will help organize the correct treatment. It is equally important to know the reasons why such bubbles appear. If we consider them as a symptom, it should be noted that pimples do not appear without a reason.

The main reason is disruption of the sebaceous glands. Increased production of sebum secretions leads to blockage and expansion of the ducts. As a result of the accumulation of fatty secretions, a bubble appears - millet.

However, even with minimal knowledge of anatomy, it can be argued that the eyelid area is practically devoid of sebaceous glands. Therefore, a number of other reasons should be considered. Moreover, there are many factors that provoke a rash on the skin of the eyelids. They can be divided into internal and external.

Immunity disorder

Due to a deficiency of minerals and vitamins in the body, as well as frequent stressful situations, there is a decrease in protective functions - immunity. And this, in turn, leads to the fact that the body with a weakened immune system cannot resist various pathogens of infectious and inflammatory processes.

The delicate skin of the eyelids, which is particularly sensitive and vulnerable, is susceptible to “attacks” of viruses and bacteria, as a result of which pustular rashes appear on the skin. At first glance, it is easy for non-professionals to confuse them with harmless millet.

Problems with the gastrointestinal tract

It is known that disturbances in the digestive system do not have the best effect on the skin of the face. The appearance of white pimples on the upper and lower eyelids can be directly related to diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. These problems lead to disruption of normal microflora, accumulation of waste and toxins, which are carried by blood throughout the body.

“Dirt” looking for a way out can manifest itself in the form of pimples, including on the eyelids. The same symptoms are also observed when proper nutrition is not observed. A large amount of unhealthy food consumed: spicy, smoked, fatty foods is accompanied by skin inflammation and rashes, which are localized in the nose, chin and eyes.

Use of low-quality cosmetics

This reason for the appearance of white pimples on the eyelids can be called the main reason for women who often use decorative cosmetics. In this case, rashes occur due to the following factors:

Cosmetics of poor quality or expired

Manufacturers with a dubious reputation may introduce chemical components into the composition of a cosmetic product that cause inflammation and irritation of the epidermis and mucous membranes. The same violations are observed when using old mascara and eye shadow. When a cosmetic product's shelf life has expired, it is unknown what reaction one or another of its constituent ingredients may cause.

In addition, the following situation occurs - some women dilute dried mascara with saliva. This should not be done under any circumstances, because saliva contains a huge amount of bacteria and microbes that provoke the appearance of acne on the eyelids.

Incorrectly selected cosmetics

Before applying cream to the skin of the eyelids, you should determine whether it matches your skin type. The use of an inappropriate product leads to the production of more secretions, as a result of which the ducts become clogged.

Untimely eyelid skin care

Whatever the quality of decorative cosmetics, it must be removed from the skin every evening. Firstly, it prevents the skin from breathing and clogs the pores. Secondly, paint (eyeliner, mascara) may contain preservatives and other chemical compounds that, when left on the skin for a long time, provoke various rashes and irritations.

Hormonal disbalance

At different periods of life, hormonal surges and changes occur in the human body. This occurs during menopause, pregnancy, and puberty. During these intervals, a deterioration in the general condition of the skin is observed. Pimples appear not only on the face, but also on other parts of the body, for example, on the back, buttocks. Rashes on the upper and lower eyelids are no exception.

Allergy

Small bubbles on the eyelids can be symptoms of an allergic reaction of the body to various irritants: wool, dust, cosmetics, household chemicals, flowering. If the appearance of pimples is accompanied by symptoms such as lacrimation, itching, coughing, nasal congestion, the presence of an allergy should be identified, and the allergen that caused it should be identified.

Mechanical damage

The natural function of the eyelids is to protect the eye. The eyelids themselves often remain unprotected. As a result of careless handling of chemicals, fire, and tools, they can easily be injured. As a result of mechanical damage, wounds of varying degrees of damage appear on the skin of the eyelids. Infection can get into the wounds and cause inflammation and acne.

How to remove a white pimple on the eyelid

Any therapeutic effects can be started only on the recommendations of a specialist. Self-medication in this case threatens to increase the number of pimples or the appearance of additional inflammatory processes.

However, it may be quite appropriate to use:

  • antibacterial drops (for example, albucid);
  • antibacterial ointments (tetracycline or erythromycin).

In any case, the occurrence of such phenomena cannot be without cause. Therefore, it is important to find out why the pimple appeared.

Inside

In the structure of the conjunctiva of the eyeball, as in the tissues of the eyelids, there is a huge number of glands that produce tear film and lubricant. If one of the glands becomes clogged, this provokes the accumulation of secretions.

In cases where this process causes any concern, the secretion compaction can be removed under sterile conditions. If this rash does not cause discomfort, then it can be left without fear of the development of pathologies.

On the bottom near the baby

In newborns, white spots on the face can appear in a variety of places.

Particularly common places for their localization can be:

  • eye area;
  • cheeks;
  • nose;
  • area of the nasolabial triangle.

Sometimes such white dots can even appear in the mouth or on the mucous membranes of the nose.

Their appearance, first of all, can be associated with two reasons:

  • immaturity of the skin ducts of the baby;
  • An overabundance of mother’s hormones while the fetus was in the womb provoked increased work of the sebaceous glands.

It is worth noting that a white pimple on the eyelid or clusters of them on the face will soon go away without any treatment. The skin will clear up as soon as the physiological processes in the baby’s body normalize.

However, for each child these terms are purely individual. In some babies, milia go away in a few days, sometimes they persist for several weeks or even months.

Folk remedies

To combat the appearance of millet on the face or in the eye area, alternative medicine offers several options.

For adults this could be:

  • applying aloe leaves;
  • compresses made from brewed black tea;
  • compresses made from a mixture of boiled potatoes, honey and egg yolk.

To remove white grains on the faces of babies, traditional medicine recommends:

  • wash the baby several times a day with clean boiled water;
  • You can add a little potassium permanganate to boiled water and wipe your face with a pale pink solution in places where white pimples form;
  • several times a day you can wash your baby with water with the addition of a decoction of string, chamomile or celandine;
  • wipe the baby's face with breast milk.

However, it is worth considering that the use of medicinal herbs can cause allergic rashes, so they should be used with caution.

Medications

Only a qualified specialist can recommend medications to combat white pimples on the eyelid.

Nevertheless, some cosmetologists recommend taking drugs such as:

  • niacin (vitamin B3);
  • biotin (vitamin H or vitamin B complex and coenzyme Q10);
  • vitamin and mineral complexes aimed at maintaining general immunity;
  • use of preventive measures.

Milia in infants

Often mothers are horrified when they notice pimples on their newborn baby’s forehead, nose, and near the eyes. White small rashes in infants are nothing more than milia. The skin of a child at this age is still immature and this rash is caused by undeveloped sebaceous ducts clogged with fat. These nodules are absolutely safe for the baby, they do not cause him pain, and, as a rule, disappear quite quickly (after 1-3 weeks) without a trace.

There is another version of the appearance of millet in infants - these are residual effects of maternal hormones on the fetus. Regardless of the reasons for the appearance of rashes, there is no need to be afraid or panic because of them, especially since you cannot remove them yourself.

In addition to the reasons listed, the appearance of pimples in the eyes of an adult can be caused by:

  • Increased cholesterol levels;
  • Herpes;
  • Hereditary predisposition.

Other types of classification

The disease can also be classified according to other criteria. For example, depending on age, the following types of acne are distinguished:

  1. Children's - they appear in infants due to the mother taking certain medications or against the background of hormonal imbalance. No special treatment is required - the rash goes away on its own.
  2. Juvenile - a normal phenomenon observed during puberty (puberty of adolescents). They are observed against the background of hormonal changes that affect the functioning of the sebaceous glands. In most cases they go away on their own.
  3. Late – acne started in adolescence, which is observed in adults.

The so-called bodybuilder's acne is classified into a separate group. In this case, the rash appears due to the use of hormonal drugs, steroids for building muscle mass. It is considered a severe form of the disease. There are also exogenous acne, which appear as a result of external influences:

  • chemical substances;
  • high air temperature;
  • high humidity and others.

Depending on the severity of the disease, 4 stages of development can be distinguished:

  1. First: damage to one or two areas of the face.
  2. Second: damage to several areas on the face or body (or simultaneously).
  3. Third: many deep papules and pustules, often with hyperemia and severe post-acne (scars after wounds).
  4. Fourth: large bluish formations (at least 5 mm in diameter), large cysts and scars are often observed.

How to treat “millet”

The method of treating pimples on the eyelids is determined by a dermatologist, based on the causes of the rash, the individual characteristics of the patient’s skin and the degree of damage: the number of blisters, their size and other related factors.

  1. Prescriptions in the initial stage usually include the use of medicinal and cosmetic products (gels, creams), antibacterial drugs (drops, ointments), and less often injections.
  2. If such treatment does not bring a positive result, it is recommended to use the services of a cosmetologist, hardware cleaning and surgical intervention.

Mechanical cleaning

This procedure should be performed by a cosmetologist. Its principle is not particularly complicated, but it requires precision and accuracy, especially when it comes to the eye area. If you remove it yourself, there is a high probability of injuring the eye and thin skin of the eyelid.

After all, the procedure is carried out using a thin special needle.

  1. You should first prepare your face: remove makeup from your eyes, wash thoroughly and wipe your skin with an alcohol-containing product.
  2. Then the skin is steamed using an inhaler - a large flask to which the face is placed and treated with steam for several minutes.
  3. After the skin has become soft, the specialist very carefully pierces the very center of the white milia nodule with a needle.
  4. After this, apply pressure to the base of the pimple with two fingers. Thanks to the puncture, a kind of hole is formed in the epithelium through which the contents of the vesicle are squeezed out.

The procedure ends with treating the wound so that the open area of the epithelium does not get infected. If everything is done carefully and correctly, then this technology does not cause any complications or pain. The next day the puncture site heals, no trace remains.

However, if the pimple is located on the eyelash line or inside the eyelid, this method of removal is not acceptable. In this case, drops are prescribed.

Drops

You should get rid of transparent bubbles located in close proximity to the mucous membrane of the eye as quickly as possible. The contents of such a pimple contain an infection and, if it gets into the eyes, can cause an inflammatory process. Therefore, eye drops with antimicrobial action are used.

They are instilled in small doses into the inner corner of the eye. Also, using a sterile cotton swab dipped in medicinal liquid, gently treat (without pressing) the surface of the pimple.

Injections

If millet lesions quickly spread in the eye area, it is recommended to use ointments: “Ichthyol”, “Zinerit”, “Tetracycline”. The action of these drugs is aimed at combating inflammatory agents.

In difficult cases, intramuscular injections replace external means. They usually inject antibiotics (Ambramycin, Tetracycline hydrochloride, etc.)

Physiotherapeutic procedures

This acne treatment is widely used in beauty salons and dermatology offices. The method is carried out by irradiating the affected area with blue light. For this purpose, special iClear XL equipment is used, which produces radiation: infrared and ultraviolet with a wavelength from 400 to 900 nm.

The rays penetrate the layers of the epidermis and kill bacteria that cause acne, without damaging the tissue. This technology is recommended for the treatment of moderate rashes.

Laser

Laser acne removal is a modern, painless and effective method. Under the influence of a stream of powerful rays, a nodule on the skin is cauterized. Crusts will form where small bubbles were treated; after a couple of days they will dry out and fall off. Subsequently, no scars remain. But to prevent infection from getting into the wounds, until they are completely healed, the laser treatment site is lubricated with a disinfectant.

Curettage

This method belongs to the mechanical classical method. It was used to cleanse the skin from deep acne. However, today curettage is rarely used, only in particularly severe cases.

The fact is that for this surgical procedure a special instrument is used - a curette, in the form of a small spoon. It is she who scrapes out the contents of the pimple. After such exposure, small scars and scars may remain on the skin. It is precisely because of its traumatic nature that the method is becoming a thing of the past.

Electrocoagulation

The method is similar to laser, but here the effect is carried out by electric current. The result is pretty good. At the site of pimples, microtraumas also appear, which subsequently become covered with a crust. To avoid infection, they are treated with an antiseptic.

Treatment at home

You can try to eliminate water pimples near the eyes using traditional methods. Please note that this process will take much longer than salon procedures. Basically, the effect of independent methods is aimed at normalizing the activity of the glands that produce sebum and at cleansing the ducts. Scrubs, compresses and masks are used for this.

Masks

  • "From paraffin" . Melt white paraffin (50-70 g) in a water bath. Degrease the face, wipe with lotion and apply a thin layer of paraffin to the problem area of the face with a brush. After it hardens, apply the next layer, and so on until the product runs out. When the mask has completely hardened, it is carefully removed.
  • "From viburnum" . Grind a handful of viburnum berries and squeeze out the juice. Pour 1-2 tablespoons of oatmeal into a bowl and dilute it with viburnum juice until a homogeneous sour cream-like mass is formed. Apply this mixture to the skin in the area of the eye sockets where the grass has settled. After half an hour, wash off the mask.
  • "From Yeast" . All ingredients are taken in equal proportions - 1 spoon each. Combine pressed (not dry!) yeast with fresh honey and dilute with lemon juice and 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. Heat the thoroughly mixed mixture slightly in a water bath and apply to the skin for 15 minutes.

Scrubs

  • "With salt" . For oily skin, combine 1 tablespoon of sour cream and sea salt; for dry skin, the fermented milk product is replaced with the same amount of olive oil. Lightly mix the ingredients, and until the salt has melted, treat the area of skin with pimples with the composition. Movements should be circular, careful without pressure. The duration of the procedure is at least 5 minutes, after which you should wash your face and lubricate the cover with a nourishing cream.
  • "With oatmeal." Combine 1 teaspoon each of soda, medium-sized salt and pre-chopped oatmeal. Dilute this mixture with 1 spoon of foam or milk for washing. Rub the problem areas thoroughly for 3-5 minutes, then wash.

Compress

  • "From cucumber" . 1 medium-sized fresh cucumber, peeled and seeded, and grated. Add 1 spoon of hot milk to the cucumber pulp. Wrap the bowl with the mixture in a warm scarf and blanket and leave for an hour. Make a mask from soft fabric (chintz is better) or gauze, folded in 2-3 layers - cut out an oval with slits for the mouth and eyes. Soak the mask in the infused mixture and apply it to your face for 25-30 minutes. The procedure is carried out daily until positive results are obtained.

What not to do

The first desire that most people have when a white pimple appears is to squeeze it out. But this absolutely cannot be done, especially if we are talking about rashes around the eyes and especially if the causes of the rash have not yet been clarified.

The contents squeezed out of the bubble contain not only the product of the sebaceous glands and toxins, but also microbes. Consequently, getting on the skin and mucous membranes of the eye can lead to the rapid spread of infection not only to the visual organ system, but also to the brain, which is in close proximity.

Prevention

In order to avoid the appearance of millet in the future, you need to take proper measures to prevent blockage of the ducts of the sebaceous glands. In addition, you should try to eliminate all factors that provoke the appearance of a rash on the eyelids:

  • Regularly keep your skin clean and remove decorative cosmetics. Choose the right makeup and skin care products;
  • Organize proper nutrition. Include more foods containing vitamins and minerals in your diet. Avoid fried, sweet, fatty foods, fast food, and do not abuse alcohol;
  • If diseases of internal organs appear, immediately undergo examination and necessary treatment

Other types of acne on the eyes

Unfortunately, acne on the eyelids can be of more than one type. In addition to the “harmless” millet, other rashes also appear near the eyes:

  • Syringoma . It manifests itself as a group of white or yellowish nodules on the lower eyelid. The reason is disruption of the activity of the sweat glands caused by endocrine disorders or metabolic disorders. Most often it affects women in adolescence and old age; in middle age it practically does not occur.
  • Zhirovik . This is a dense subcutaneous neoplasm, inside of which there is adipose tissue. Often in the initial stages of development it is confused with a pimple, but it is impossible to eliminate (squeeze out) a wen without the help of a specialist.
  • Chalazion . A dense growth on the eyelid in the form of a nodule occurs due to a violation of the outflow of fatty secretions. The likelihood of a chalazion increases after previous diseases: rosacea, seborrhea, blepharitis and “regular” stye.
  • Reddish rash . This rash may appear on the face as a symptom of a skin disease, allergy or infection. Only a doctor can distinguish the nature of the rash, for example, determine what kind of disease it is - demodicosis or rubella, and prescribe the necessary treatment.
  • Pinguecula . It appears as a small growth located on the surface of the white of the eyeball. The causes of occurrence are exposure to dust, dirt, and harmful effects of sunlight on the mucous membrane.
  • Xanthelasma . The pimple has a loose yellow consistency. Most often it “settles” singly on the upper eyelid, but several can appear. Gradually its size increases. The reasons that provoke the appearance are lipid metabolism disorders, high cholesterol levels, liver problems.
  • Barley . Inflammation of the hair (eyelash) follicle due to infection there is manifested by the formation of a seal on the eyelid. The subcutaneous nodule quickly swells, increases in size, and areas of the epidermis around it swell and turn red. More often this happens due to decreased immunity.
  • Watery pimple. Such pimples, similar to a frozen drop of water, have transparent contents. The nature of their occurrence is varied: it can be herpes, chickenpox, measles, allergies. Also, such rashes can appear due to hormonal imbalance, hypothermia or improper metabolism. Pimples “settle” around the lips, eyes, shoulders, and buttocks. Simultaneously with the appearance of the rash, the temperature may rise.

Symptoms

The symptoms of each disease are also different. What is common to all is only a change in the shape of the eyelid, the appearance of some formation that was not there before. Common symptoms may also include:

  1. Pain syndrome, which may be stronger or weaker in different people. Pain occurs due to compression of adjacent tissues and nerve endings.
  2. Sensation of a foreign body in the eye. This is how many people describe any new growth on the upper eyelid. For this reason, a person has an unbearable desire to scratch his eye or just his eyelid, but even after that the itching does not go away.
  3. Redness. This sign is not typical for all cases of growth formation on the upper eyelids.
  4. Swelling. It usually appears when there is an active inflammatory process. In addition to this symptom, local hyperemia (fever) may be observed.

As the disease develops and the pathology moves to neighboring tissues, symptoms may increase. For example, a person begins to complain about decreased visual acuity, the appearance of “spots” in front of the eyes, and blurred images of surrounding objects. These manifestations are especially dangerous because they indicate the rapid progression and spread of the disease. By the way, sometimes the complications and consequences of a number of diseases turn out to be irreversible.

If one or several pimples appear on your eyelid, there is no need to try to squeeze out the bump. And you shouldn’t wait for the rash to “dissolve” on its own. By consulting a doctor and finding out the cause of the rash, you can quickly get rid of the unpleasant blisters without causing harm to your own health and beauty.
