Spine on the toe: causes, symptoms and treatment

Spike: what is it and where does it come from?

Dense tubercles on the toes and between them are often injured under the influence of constant mechanical stress, which leads to severe pain. Also, damage to the spines opens the way for pathogenic microflora that penetrates through cracks and wounds deep into the skin. Therefore, dermatologists strongly recommend not to let the disease progress and to remove such growths in a timely manner.

The cause of the formation of spines on the foot is papillomavirus types I and IV. A viral infection easily enters the body through damaged epidermis and provokes the development of growths not only on the legs, but also on the arms.

If a person has a very strong immune system, then the disease can remain latent for a long time and not make itself felt. The latent form of human papillomavirus (HPV) sometimes remains asymptomatic for decades, while the person is still a spreader of the infection.

Under the influence of certain unfavorable factors, the body's protective functions may weaken, and at this moment the papillomavirus enters the active stage. In addition to decreased immunity, there are other reasons why HPV can awaken:

  • prolonged exposure to stress;
  • disruption of the nervous system;
  • overheating in the sun;
  • insufficient consumption of vegetables and fruits;
  • the presence of various chronic diseases.

After the papillomavirus has entered the active phase, a person begins to develop benign neoplasms in the area of the big toe or little toe. Under the influence of friction from shoes while walking, they quickly become rough and begin to look like calluses or corns.

Important! Dermatologists unanimously recognized growths in the foot area as the most difficult to treat manifestation of papillomavirus. In particular, this applies to neglected spines, which have long grown into the deep layers of the epidermis.

Lack of proper attention to this problem can be the main reason for the development of oncology. Damaged growths often degenerate into cancerous tumors, requiring very complex and expensive treatment.

Stages of disease development

The pathology has several stages of development, each of which is characterized by clinical symptoms:

  1. The appearance of a small tubercle and roughening of the skin around the tumor.
  2. The appearance of sharp, sharp pain (similar to a needle prick) when pressing on the growth.
  3. An increase in the size of the spine, darkening and peeling of its upper layers.
  4. With the development of the pathological process, the appearance of small neoplasms around the main growth is noticeable (penetration of the roots of the spine deep into the tissues).
  5. When the spine is pressed or damaged, a cloudy, purulent fluid is released.

Popular methods for removing spines

The choice of appropriate treatment depends on the stage of development of the disease and the depth of root germination. Dermatologists often recommend removing the spine using one of the existing cosmetic surgeries:

  • electrocoagulation;
  • laser destruction;
  • radio wave surgery;
  • freezing with liquid nitrogen.

In some advanced cases, none of the listed methods will bring 100% results, since an old wart on the foot has a very deep root, which can only be completely removed through surgery. In this case, the surgeon uses a scalpel to cut out the growth along with the root and apply sutures to the postoperative wound.

If the patient categorically does not want to go under the surgeon’s knife and insists on visiting a cosmetology center, then such a decision can lead to the fact that after incomplete removal of the root of the spine, it will appear again. In view of this, all treatment will be pointless.

Also, after partial removal of the spine shaft, there is a possibility that small group neoplasms will appear on healthy areas of the skin of the foot. Therefore, it is very important to completely get rid of the deep root by any means, even surgically.

The effectiveness of cosmetic surgeries

Beauty salons and medical centers assure their clients that all cosmetic services for getting rid of spines are equally effective in combating all types of growths, regardless of their complexity. But experts warn that not all methods can completely get rid of old tumors, and often after surgery the patient is left with a small part of the wart root, which later becomes the cause of relapse of the disease.

Dermatologists are skeptical about liquid nitrogen freezing (cryodestruction) when removing old, deep-core growths. This is explained by the fact that this method is effective for fresh tumors, but to get rid of a large root, deeper freezing of the epidermis is necessary, which will lead to damage not only to infected cells, but also to healthy areas of the skin.

The same can be said about electrocoagulation. It is effective in removing small spines on the toes and between them, but it will not help get rid of old warts.

Symptoms

Why are spines so unpleasant? To answer this question, you need to talk about the manifestations of the disease. So:

  • warts appear one or several at a time;
  • grow gradually, sometimes merging into one large formation;
  • cause pain to a person when touched, as if pricked by a plant thorn (perhaps that is why this name appeared);
  • grow deep into the skin, reach the muscles, exfoliate the skin;
  • significantly spoil the appearance of the hands and feet.

Besides the fact that spines hurt, they also look very unattractive

Drug treatment

Removing warts on the toes is a short-term solution to the problem. No expensive operations will help to completely cope with the papillomavirus, since after getting rid of the growths, the disease still remains in the body. Therefore, the appearance of new warts is inevitable until the disease is destroyed from the inside.

For complete treatment of HPV, dermatologists select for patients a course of taking antiviral drugs along with vitamin complexes that strengthen the immune system. Basically, the patient is prescribed one of the following medications:

  • Viferon;
  • Allokin Alpha;

  • Isoprinosine;
  • Lycopid.

At the initial stage of spine development, cosmetic surgeries can be replaced with topical medications:

  • Aldara cream;
  • Superclean liquid;
  • Panavir gel;
  • Oxolinic ointment;
  • Viferon ointment;
  • Salicylic ointment.

Appearance of the growth: how to distinguish it from a regular callus?

The appearance of a spine is similar to the formation of a callus - a small, rather dense elevation appears on the surface of the skin (most often on the fingers, around the nails, on the pads or on the side of the hand).

However, when pressing on such a neoplasm, a sharp pain occurs - this distinguishes the spine from an ordinary callus (which, as a rule, is painless).

In addition to the keratinized upper layer, the spine has multiple thread-like growths, covered with small papillae that penetrate deep into the muscle layers.

That is why removing only the top layer of the neoplasm leads to its re-growth - new spines appear thanks to the papillae, which remain deep in the skin. Sometimes several neoplasms appear that can grow together.

At the first stage of its development, the spine resembles an ordinary callus: the skin in a certain place becomes rough, acquiring a whitish-yellow color.

An ordinary callus appears and quickly disappears: a watery bubble with liquid forms at the site of friction, which soon disappears and the callus heals within a few days. When a spine forms, liquid does not accumulate inside the growth.

How to cure spines at home?

There are many effective ways to remove growths on the toes using folk recipes, without visiting a hospital. Most doctors recommend that their patients combine “grandmother’s” methods with medications. Such a comprehensive treatment will contribute to a quick recovery and complete removal of the spine along with the root.

Acetic acid

Using ordinary table vinegar can get rid of small spines on the toes along with the root in a short period of time. To treat warts on the foot, it is advisable to use 40% vinegar essence, but if the skin is highly sensitive, doctors advise diluting it slightly with water or a decoction of medicinal herbs (chamomile, calendula, etc.).

Removing finger spines using vinegar consists of several sequential steps:

  1. washing feet with antibacterial soap;
  2. lubricating healthy areas of skin around the spine with Vaseline or baby cream;
  3. applying a cotton swab soaked in acetic acid to your finger;
  4. fixing the compress with a simple medical adhesive plaster or bandage.

During the treatment of the wart, a burning sensation may be felt - this is normal. If the vinegar burns so much that it is impossible to tolerate, then the cotton swab should be immediately removed and the foot should be washed in cold water without detergent.

The duration of treatment depends on the severity of the growth. Usually, to get rid of a small tumor, you will need to apply a vinegar compress at night every day for two weeks or more.
