Skinoren gel and cream have the ability to eliminate problems caused by acne, various rashes, and skin irritations, that is, restore a healthy appearance to the skin. The action of these two forms is the same, there are differences in the effectiveness of the drugs, each of which exhibits its own positive properties for various skin diseases.
- Skinoren cream has a creamy consistency of medium thickness. It has a homogeneous composition of whitish color. The active ingredient of the cream is azelaic acid. Release form: aluminum tube weighing 30 g.
- Skinoren gel has a light structure that is capable of faster absorption. The active ingredient is azelaic acid. It is a substance with an opaque homogeneous structure, white or yellowish in color. Release form: aluminum tube in 5, 15, 30, 50 g.
Composition of Skinoren cream and gel
The cream manifests itself as a product that can have an effect aimed at foci of inflammation. The active substance in its composition is azelaic acid, the uniqueness of which makes the cream effective against skin rashes. Azelaic acid included in the gel has only a 15% concentration, whereas in the cream it is in a concentration of 20%. Unlike the gel, the cream also contains other components that increase its effectiveness.
Effect of Skinoren cream and gel
Skinoren group skin products in the form of cream and gel have approximately the same effect on problem skin, thanks to the active substance in the form of azelaic acid. Some difference in their action is due to different concentrations of this component. There is less of it in the gel, but the light structure of this form of the drug ensures rapid penetration of the main substance into the deeper layer of the skin, so there is no need for its high concentration.
The effective action of Skinoren in the form of a cream is due to the high content of oils, since 15% of its composition is the presence of fatty acids, in contrast to the gel, where there are only 3%. Therefore, the cream is not able to penetrate deep into the epidermis, but it has an effective therapeutic effect on the surface layer of the skin.
The effect of Skinoren drugs is approximately the same; their use can eliminate the following pathological disorders in the body:
- Destruction of bacterial microflora, as a result of which the risk of developing infectious processes increases.
- Normalizing the function of the sebaceous glands, stopping the excessive secretion of subcutaneous fat.
- Elimination of inflammation that forms at the site of rashes.
- Bringing the general condition of the skin back to normal, smoothing its texture and restoring color.
Thanks to azelaic acid, which is included in the composition of the preparations, the violation of the acid-base level of the skin is eliminated, bringing its components back to normal. Thanks to this main component, Skinoren preparations can influence the composition of the enzyme that skin pores secrete. The anti-inflammatory effect of a gel or cream lies in its ability to change the components included in sebum, thereby creating an acidic environment. As a result of this, harmful bacteria entering the skin pores die.
One of the many benefits of using the products is to reduce skin sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation and protect against its radiation. Therefore, for example, the cream has proven itself well as a day cream that increases the protective properties of the epidermis.
Medicines for problem skin
Let's talk about what topical medications are designed to treat acne and how they work.
We will talk about external medications that I tried on my own skin.
Acne medications are divided into four groups:
1. Based on azelaic acid: Skinoren, Azelik, Azix-derm.
2. Retinoid-based: Clenzit, Adaklin, Deriva, Differin.
3. Based on antibiotics: Zinerit, Dalatsin, Klindovit, Zerkalin.
4. Based on benzoyl peroxide: Baziron.
There are mixed preparations: Effezel (retinoid (adapalene) + benzoyl peroxide), Klenzit S (antibiotic (clindamycin) + retinoid (adapalene)).
The list is not complete, there are other means that I simply don’t remember or don’t know. The listed drugs are sold in pharmacies in Russia and, as far as I know, in Ukraine) without a prescription.
I will not talk about the components, since they will be discussed one way or another when describing each specific drug.
✎ Skinoren, Azelik, Azix-derm, Skinoklir
All three drugs are made based on azelaic acid. This substance acts on the following causes of acne:
- kills bacteria (acne bacteria and staphylococci, which cause pimples and pus);
- has an anti-inflammatory effect;
- promotes exfoliation of dead cells.
Unlike some other drugs, it acts not only on the surface of the skin, but also penetrates into deeper layers - the dermis, where it performs the same functions.
Azelaic acid does not affect the production of sebum; this problem must be solved by other means when using Skinoren.
Skinoren, the most expensive, is considered the original drug containing azelaic acid. Cream 20% with a volume of 30 ml now costs 1,039 rubles (according to pharmacy.ru), gel 15% with a volume of 30 ml costs 993 rubles. Skinoren is the only drug that produces azelaic acid in the form of a gel.
All other preparations, even if they say “gel,” have a creamy texture. Don't be confused by the difference in dosage. The gel has a greater ability to penetrate the skin, while the cream has less. Therefore, the percentage of azelaic acid in the cream is increased so that more of it penetrates the skin.
The choice between gel and cream is made according to the following principle: gel is suitable if you have very oily, very thick, completely insensitive skin. In all other cases - cream. I once thought my skin was like this. but the gel did not suit me at all - it stung wildly, burned, and irritated the skin.
I even thought that Skinoren was an advertising gimmick, but in reality it was a complete fool of buyers. But the cream went very well, and the drug was rehabilitated in my eyes.
All other drugs differ from Skinoren only in manufacturer and price:
Azelik 30 ml – 600 rubles
Azix-derm 30 ml – 590 rubles
Among these drugs, I liked Azelik the most.
When applied, all these drugs sting the face and make you want to scratch. This desire must be overcome, and the itching will pass after a while. At first, I advise you to apply it only at night, but in general, azelaic acid is also suitable for daytime use.
The result does not come immediately. Those who are unable to wait more than a week will not wait for him. I noticed the first changes that were noticeable to myself and those around me after a month, more lasting ones - after two months of use. 30 ml is enough for 2-3 months of use.
The result is clear skin without acne and comedones, a healthy complexion.
Skinoren/Azelik is good for mild to moderate acne. But severe, stagnant phenomena are more difficult for them to cure. Cosmetologists say that this is generally a drug that requires combination with something else, for example, an antibiotic.
And indeed, during the period of using Skinoren/Azelik, I experienced severe rashes that these drugs could not stop and contain.
Makeup on these creams does not apply very well, but you can manage it.
Azelaic acid is one of the few acne remedies that can be used in the summer.
✎ Klenzit, Adaklin, Differin, Deriva
I will say right away that the active ingredient in all these drugs is the retinoid adapalene. Retinoids are a class of substances derived from retinol - vitamin A. In addition to adapalene, there are other retinoids - for example, tretinoin, or retinoic acid.
The principle of action of retinoids on the skin is as follows:
- penetrates deep into the skin, accelerating its natural exfoliation (exfoliation);
- normalize the activity of the sebaceous glands (yay!)
- heal the skin, restoring it from the inside
Thus, retinoids kill two main birds with one stone in the acne story: less sebum and dead cells - less bacteria habitat - less acne.
Retinoids have quite a few nuances of use:
- they collapse in the light
- they increase skin sensitivity to the sun
- they interact poorly with other substances and drugs
Therefore, retinoids are applied ONLY AT NIGHT, 20 minutes after washing, without other preparations, with the exception of some hydrolatic and eye cream. It is better to start by applying every other day, in small doses, in a thin layer.
The beginning of the use of retinoids is autumn, the end is the beginning of spring. Sanskrin is required. Failure to follow these rules causes dryness, irritation, terrible peeling, redness and the appearance of the skin, like after a medium peel.
And this may not go away over time.
The most famous and affordable retinoids in Russia are Differin gel - 768 rubles, cream - 778 rubles and Klenzit gel - 540 rubles. . Less known - Adaklin cream - 450 rubles. All have the same volume (30 ml) and dosage of adapalene (0.1%). There are also foreign drugs like Retin-A.
I used the drug Adaklin. At first I made a lot of mistakes and violated the rules of application. The result is severe dry skin, even in places where the cream did not reach - on the eyelids, for example. Peeling, redness. With all retinoids, it is necessary to moisturize the skin - light non-allergic gels, serums, masks.
Also, at first you need to be prepared for the unrealistic speed of formation and disappearance of new acne. Literally jumped up in the morning, disappeared in the evening.
In general, the result of using adapalene alone did not satisfy me: pimples, although smaller, continued to form, and even this terrible dryness, it was impossible to properly camouflage the face... Although many people like retinoids very well and like them even more than acids.

✎ Dalatsin, Klindovit, Zerkalin
Speaking about antibiotics, I will talk specifically about these, the active ingredient in which is the external antibiotic Clindamycin. I have never tried Zenerit and, to be honest, I don’t plan to. It has a different active ingredient – erythromycin.
So, clindamycin is an antibiotic that is used for a wide range of unpleasant diseases accompanied by pus, inflammation, and sepsis. Of the skin, these are purulent infections of the skin and soft tissues, including acne, boils, cellulitis, impetigo, felon, infected wounds, abscesses, erysipelas... In short, ordinary acne is very afraid of it.
An antibiotic, as an antibiotic should, kills acne bacteria.
However, it does not solve two primary skin problems - greasiness and hyperkeratosis. If you do not monitor them, the problem will return after the course of clindamycin is completed. Therefore, I recommend pairing it with exfoliating products such as acids or retinoids.
Dalatsin and Klindovit have the same volume and dosage (30 ml, 1%), but different price categories - 672 and 325 rubles, respectively. Zerkalin is generally an alcohol solution. Price 247 rubles.
I highly recommend not neglecting topical antibiotics when treating acne. Yes, we have all heard about the dangers of antibiotics, how they kill the immune system and generally fu-fu-fu.
But if you have, excuse me, an apocalypse on your face, no one will wait for retinoids and acids to take effect and bring the skin back to normal.
And an antibiotic is a good way to relieve an acute inflammatory process and significantly reduce the number of purulent, abundant pimples.
Once Dalatsin literally saved me from a very, very severe rash. Doesn't dry out the skin, doesn't cause addiction, doesn't sting, doesn't irritate. A very pleasant product to use.
But I don’t recommend Zerkalin. The harm from alcohol, in my opinion, significantly exceeds the possible benefit from the antibiotic. If you use it, it should only be spot-on or not on the face (but on the back, shoulders, etc.).
✎ Baziron
The most mysterious and very first pharmaceutical drug that I fell in love with. With Baziron I had the longest period of clear skin - 3 years!
And this is the story. I went to a cosmetologist for my first facial cleansing. She cleaned me and recommended Baziron 5%. I bought. And I forgot about acne for 3 years. That is, in reality, either clear skin, or, at most, 1-2 stray pimples.
Then something happened in my body, I started getting more and more sleep again. I went again for cleaning, but to a different cosmetologist. She scolded me for putting my skin on Baziron, saying it’s an antibiotic! And she told me to switch to acid care.
Which is what I did.
But with no acids, no retinoids and their combinations, I have never had such a long period of clear skin without hassle. I tried to return to Baziron again, but I couldn’t get the same effect. Why dont know.
By the way, the latter cosmetologist turned out to be not very competent. The fact is that the active ingredient of Baziron is not an antibiotic, but benzoyl peroxide. This is a substance that has 2 actions:
- antibacterial – kills acne bacteria
- keratolytic – exfoliates the skin
Baziron applied to a pimple reduces it by at least half overnight. It dries the skin very well - it becomes much less oily. But you need to be careful with it: it can dry out a lot, if you don’t take care of moisturizing, cause irritation and peeling, especially if you apply a thick layer, a lot and go out into strong sun. At the same time, during the day it is quite wearable even in summer.
It is recommended to start Baziron with a dosage of no more than 5%. 10% is no longer for the face, only for the body (back, shoulders, décolleté). Not long ago, Baziron 2.5% appeared in Russia. This is perfect for a start.
By the way, I know little about washes and other products under this brand, but I have no desire to buy them - I read the ingredients, I was not impressed. Depending on the dosage, Baziron costs 683 and 735 rubles, respectively. At first, I recommend just a very thin layer, not even on the whole face. Then increase it to normal.
Otherwise, the skin may react unpleasantly to it, a reflex similar to an allergy will develop and you will never be able to use Baziron.
In general, from the above list, for those who have not yet tried pharmaceutical drugs or have not tried Baziron, I would highly recommend buying it and trying it.
✎ Mixed preparations
Separately, I will say a few words about the drug Klenzit S - this is a combination medicine that combines adapalene and clindamycin. A lot of people like it, including me. The review for Klenzit S in my profile on IRecommend is the most viewed.
The combination of components is so successful that people sit on Klenzit S for years and do not want to get off. The only negative is that due to the retinoid in the composition, it is not suitable for the summer, otherwise there is a risk of skin hyperpigmentation.
But I would also confidently recommend it for autumn-winter.
This concludes my review of pharmaceutical acne products. It's incomplete, I know. Partially due to honesty - I only told about what I tried. Partly due to the separation of materials, I talk about budget drugs separately.
Also, many experts on this problem may ask why drugs such as Curiosin and Regetsin are not mentioned? Because I have IMHO - they do not treat acne and their effect is somewhat different.
