Metronidazole for demodicosis: how to take, dosage and regimen

Metronidazole for demodicosis: application features

We are glad to meet you again, dear subscribers! We decided to devote a new article to a detailed study of a drug that helps get rid of subcutaneous demodex mites.

When, to whom, and in what doses is metronidazole needed for demodicosis, and how effective is it? Is it possible to replace it with new generation alternative medicines?

Let's figure it out together.

Concept and consequences of the disease

Demodicosis is one of the diseases that affects the skin of the face, and a little less often - the body. Its cause is the activation of the mite that lives under the skin - demodex.

Few people with healthy skin realize that this parasite can also be found in them. However, for a long time the tick may not make itself known.

The reason for its reproduction and activation can be a variety of factors - from long-term use of hormonal contraceptives to poor nutrition.

Without proper treatment, demodicosis of the skin easily turns into a chronic disease, with various complications (skin infection, pathological changes in the organs of vision, etc.).

The classical treatment regimen is selected only by a qualified specialist. It necessarily includes antibiotics for external use, such as metrodinazole or drugs containing it.

Forms and features of use of the drug

Conservative medicine gives preference to metronidazole and drugs that include this antibiotic as the main component. Classic treatment has the following goals:

  • reduce the number of adult active ticks to a minimum, partially destroy them;
  • eliminate unpleasant consequences in the form of rash, redness of the skin, inflammation of the sebaceous glands.

Is it possible to get rid of parasites completely by destroying all larvae and adult ticks?

Theoretically, this is possible with long-term treatment with potent drugs. However, in practice it has been proven that none of us is immune from tactile contact with a person or animal on whose skin demodex lives. He is happy to “move” to healthy skin.

NOTE!

To quickly get rid of blackheads, acne and pimples, as well as to rejuvenate your facial skin, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with this effective remedy .

Metronidazole is not just an antibiotic, but a synthetic agent with a powerful antiprotozoal effect.

In other words, the medicine is aimed at reducing the number of parasites and harmful microorganisms: it causes suffocation of adults and larvae.

In parallel with this antibiotic:

  1. reduces swelling of affected tissues;
  2. helps strengthen immunity;
  3. reduces inflammation.

Since demodicosis can affect various organs, the drug is produced in several forms:

  • for oral administration - tablets;
  • for external use – ointment, cream, gel;
  • for intravenous injections - solutions;
  • for vaginal administration - suppositories.

Most often, in the conservative treatment of demodicosis, tablets and means for external treatment of the affected areas of the skin are used.

The minimum course of taking pills is 14-20 days. During this time, the skin condition noticeably improves, hyperemia and rashes are reduced, and new acne does not appear.

To consolidate lasting results, repeat courses of taking pills are prescribed. They must be consumed regularly, without missing a single dose.

Is it possible to forget about the pill in the morning and take a double dose next time?

No, this is unacceptable. The antibiotic, dissolving in the stomach, enters the blood, and from there it spreads to all organs, including mite-affected skin cells and sebaceous glands. If you forget about the pill, the effectiveness of the treatment decreases, and demodex may perceive this as an unexpected break and develop immunity to the medicine.

The tablets are taken a couple of hours after the main meal, 1 pill (250 mg) twice a day, washed down with plenty of liquid (pure water, but not coffee!).

Ointment, cream or gel is applied twice a day directly to mite-infested areas of cleansed skin, and also applied to the adjacent 2-3 cm of healthy skin.

Why do this? It is necessary to create an insurmountable barrier for the tick, otherwise the destruction of parasites in a separate area will lead to the fact that it will simply move to the healthy dermis.

Metronidazole for external use helps:

  • reduction of inflammatory processes;
  • skin healing;
  • preventing scars and scars.

In severe cases, with severe rashes, metrodinazole gel or cream can be used as compresses.

To do this, apply a thick layer of medicine to a gauze bandage and then apply it to the damaged areas of the skin.

Is it possible to use tablets and gel simultaneously in the complex treatment of demodicosis?

The regimen, form and dosage of drugs is determined by the doctor. But usually metronidazole tablets are combined with other external agents (Rozex, etc.), and vice versa.

Medicines containing metronidazole

Many of the modern drugs for the treatment of demodicosis and other skin diseases contain metronidazole as the main component.

The most famous are:

  • trichopolum;
  • Metrogyl (gel and cream) as an adjuvant;
  • rozamet and rosex (for rosacea, to prevent scars and dark spots);
  • demalan with a pronounced dermatropic effect;
  • flagyl, etc.

Here the action of the antibiotic is complemented by other substances. Combinations are selected individually, according to the needs of the patient's skin.

The most successful is the combination of metrodinazole for external use with trichopolum for oral administration.

Side effects and contraindications

Side effects that occur with long-term use of metronidazole include:

  • disturbances in the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract;
  • local irritation of the skin;
  • the appearance of itching;
  • dryness and flaking of the skin.

Metronidazole is not recommended for use in children under 6 years of age, with individual intolerance to the drug, as well as during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is also advised to abstain from it in the following cases:

  • leukopenia;
  • epileptic seizures;
  • malfunctions of the liver and kidneys.

Home remedies based on the drug

You can prepare medicinal products at home using metronidazole tablets. They will be an excellent addition to traditional medicines.

One of the easiest to prepare and practically use is lotion.

To do this take:

  • 5 metronidazole tablets, ground into powder;
  • 0.5 tbsp. clean water.

The tablets are poured into water and stirred until completely dissolved. The resulting liquid is wiped over cleansed skin several times a day.

A mask for demodicosis is prepared on the basis of cosmetic (white) clay. To do this you will need:

  • ready-made lotion based on metronidazole (for dilution);
  • 1 tbsp. white clay.

The clay is diluted with liquid to a consistency reminiscent of thick sour cream. Then the mask is applied to the affected areas of the skin, after 5-10 minutes, when the mass dries, it is washed off with clean water.

This concludes our article, dear readers.

Metronidazole is an affordable and effective remedy that, when used correctly, helps cure demodicosis. But the method of its use must be agreed with your doctor.

We tried to present basic information about the drug and the simplest recipes for preparing home remedies based on it.

Terms of use

The drug can be taken orally or applied as a mask to inflamed areas of the body. Taking the drug orally will be justified in cases where acne is caused by demodicosis.

If acne is associated with hormonal changes, poor diet or other similar factors, then it is better to avoid taking Trichopolum orally. In this case, it is more advisable to use Trichopolum cream or ointment.

Ointment for acne on the face is applied to a previously cleaned damaged area of skin in a thin layer twice a day. The duration can be up to two months. It is allowed to alternate cream and ointment. Visible results are noticeable only in the third week of treatment. The gel is water-based, absorbs well and leaves no residue.

How to take medicine when the cause is in the gastrointestinal tract? If diseases of the digestive organs are caused by microbes and bacteria, then the drug is prescribed 2 tablets twice a day for 10 days.

General recommendations noted in the instructions for use include:

  • the number of days of taking pills should not last more than 10 days;
  • cannot be combined with other antibiotics;
  • the medicine is incompatible with alcohol;
  • may reduce concentration.

Contraindications are pregnancy, lactation, hypersensitivity to all incoming components. The drug should not be used internally in patients who suffer from epilepsy or have serious pathologies of the liver and kidneys.

Like any other antibiotic, Trichopolum against demodicosis kills not only pathogenic microflora, but also suppresses the number of beneficial bacteria. Dysbacteriosis and thrush may develop. Therefore, it is imperative to take an antibiotic simultaneously with vitamins, immunomodulators, and prebiotics.

Metronidazole for demodicosis: treatment regimen

Demodicosis is a disease that affects the skin of the face and body. It is a consequence of the activation of the demodex mite, which settles under the skin. The tricky thing is that this parasite can hide for a long time and not make itself felt. The remedy Metronidazole for demodicosis deserves attention. Let's consider the nuances of its use, advantages, as well as instructions.

The mechanism of action of metronidazole on demodicosis

Metronidazole is a drug, an antibiotic. It is prescribed for diseases of a bacterial nature. Doctors recommend using it for demodicosis in the form of tablets and gel.

The advantage of use is its effect not on the symptoms, but on the causative factors of the disease. The active elements included in the substance easily penetrate the bacterial elements and destroy them.

In addition, the product helps prevent the formation of scars after a rash. The effect on the body is extensive.

The composition is widely used in the treatment of other skin diseases of the face and body. Affordable cost and wide spectrum of action make it popular among children and adult patients.

Indications for use

The peculiarity of the drug is that it is used to treat acne, rashes on the face and body. Indications for the use of this drug are the following pathologies:

  • disturbances in the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract,
  • hormonal imbalances, especially in adolescence,
  • demodicosis,
  • dermatosis expressed in chronic form.

In addition, Metronidazole and antibiotic drugs not based on it are widely used in the case of other conditions:

  • amoebic organ damage,
  • the occurrence of lamblia in the duodenum,
  • abscesses formed in the area of bones and soft tissues,
  • skin infections,
  • inflammation of the periosteum and bone structures,
  • colitis,
  • preventive measures for complications after surgery.

For people facing skin diseases, the manufacturer has created two forms of medication - in tablets and in the form of an ointment (Metrogyl gel).

Therefore, the drug involves several methods of use - internal (oral) and external (local).

The choice of one method or another is made depending on the degree of damage and the individual characteristics of the patient’s body.

Instructions

The composition can be used only after consultation with a treating specialist. It is he who assesses the degree of skin damage and selects an acceptable treatment option. And then the patient can only use the product according to the prescribed treatment regimen.

Instructions for use of the gel

Metrogyl gel is produced on the basis of the main substance – metronidazole. You can buy it at any pharmacy. The gel is transparent and odorless. For effective treatment, the composition must be applied locally to the inflamed areas after preliminary cleansing of the skin and used several times a day (the exact amount will be advised by the doctor).

You need to smear it for 3-4 weeks, until the rash completely goes away. The advantages are ease of application and absence of discomfort.

Instructions for tablets

Often, doctors, along with external use or separately, prescribe oral administration of this substance. The duration of oral treatment is from a week to 10 days, twice a day - 250 mg in the morning and evening.

This type of therapy against parasites is relevant in a situation where bacteria have caused serious internal inflammation.

But often tablets can also be used for external application, because doctors recommend using their composition to make special medicinal compositions - emulsions, masks, lotions.

  1. If you want to make an effective homemade lotion, you need to prepare 5 crushed tablets and mix them with 100 ml of water. Dip a cotton pad in the pulp and use it to treat the affected areas twice a day.
  2. The mask is prepared as follows: crushed tablets are added to the same amount of white clay, i.e. in a ratio of 1 to 1. Purified water is added, the overall consistency should resemble sour cream. The mask is applied to the skin that has passed the preliminary stage of cleansing, to the affected area and left on it for 10-15 minutes.

So we looked at how to take this remedy so that it brings the desired result and does not cause harm. Both gel and tablets require caution and safety precautions. Therefore, in both cases, consultation with a doctor is required.

Contraindications and restrictions

Despite the large number of advantages that this remedy has, self-medication is contraindicated, because there are many restrictions and prohibitions on its use:

  • “interesting situation” (pregnancy) and lactation,
  • childhood and adolescence,
  • acute kidney failure, liver failure,
  • individual allergies,
  • complications in the functioning of the central nervous system,
  • chronic blood and circulatory diseases.

Side effects and contraindications are few. In these cases, it is strictly forbidden to treat eyelid disease with this remedy. Otherwise, adverse reactions may occur.

Possible side effects and consequences

If the patient exceeds the dose recommended by the specialist, there is a possibility of negative side effects. They can manifest themselves in the following conditions:

  • redness of the skin,
  • itching sensation,
  • burning,
  • general weakness.

If the overdose is significant, there is a possibility of loss of orientation and seizures. At the same time, the patient’s general health may also deteriorate.

Other drugs based on metronidazole

For demodicosis, it is effective to use some other skin preparations containing this effective substance.

Here is a short list of them.

  1. Rosamet. The composition contains 1% metronidazole. It is antimicrobial, antibacterial and is used not only in the case of the disease in question, but has also proven itself in the treatment of acne, rosacea, and vulvovaginitis. The drug has an anti-inflammatory effect and is widely used as part of complex therapy and as a separate drug.
  2. Metrogil Gel. Release form - in the form of a colorless homogeneous gel 10 mg/30 mg, which is used for the external treatment of demodicosis and a number of other diseases. This is an antimicrobial agent that actively fights a large number of skin diseases and has virtually no contraindications.
  3. Trichopolum. This is a tablet form of the drug, which successfully copes with the treatment of bacterial and genitourinary postoperative infections, as well as diseases such as vaginitis, periodontitis, and gingivitis. The product has a low cost and involves a large number of contraindications and restrictions on use.

Thus, metronidazole is a medicine that has a wide spectrum of action, eliminating a large number of pathologies, including demodicosis. We reviewed the indications and contraindications for its use, as well as detailed instructions for use.

Metronidazole is recognized as one of the best remedies for various skin conditions and helps improve overall health after just a few uses. To avoid complications and adverse reactions, be sure to consult a doctor.

"Metronidazole" for demodicosis - how the drug affects ticks, indications for use

Demodicosis is a disease that affects the skin (SC). It occurs due to the activation of a special mite that lives under the skin. The complexity of the disease is due to the fact that the parasite may not show signs of its presence for a long time. The drug Metronidazole is often used to treat the disease.

How it develops

Scientists have confirmed that the likelihood of the disease is not affected by a person’s age or gender. Most often, demodicosis develops on the face and head, since the cervix in these areas contains many sebaceous glands, the secretions of which serve as food for the mite.

Pathology occurs due to:

  • low immunity,
  • impaired sebum production,
  • the presence of skin diseases.

Often the person himself is to blame for infection with demodicosis. Self-removal of pimples, acne, ulcers and other formations helps the mite penetrate deep into the CP. Demodectic mange can also be a consequence of long-term use of antibiotics and steroid hormones, or the use of low-quality decorative cosmetics.

Bad habits and poor nutritional diet also contribute to the development of demodicosis.

Close contact with an infected person also leads to demodicosis. But this is only possible if the patient has more than 30 parasites in one sebaceous gland.

Important! Demodicosis also develops in pets. But its pathogens are completely safe for humans.

Symptoms of the disease

Often, signs of demodicosis appear on the head, nose, nasolabial triangle, forehead, cheeks, chin and eyelids, since it is in these places that sebum is produced in large quantities. Its amount increases if the patient’s body has disrupted hormonal levels, the functionality of internal organs or immunity.

Many dermatologists agree that the main symptom of demodicosis is the appearance of rosacea (rosacea) on the skin. A person may suffer from persistent skin hyperemia, pink papules, and pustules.

The advanced stage of the disease is manifested by compaction of the KP and spider veins. The patient begins to complain of severe itching and a feeling of tightening of the joint. Lack of adequate therapy leads to the development of rhinophyma.

The intensity of the manifestation of symptoms is enhanced by an oily KP and enlarged pores.

In elderly people, in addition to the above symptoms, ocular demodicosis develops, manifested by blepharoconjunctivitis and blepharitis. They suffer from dry eyes, foreign body sensation, redness, and watery eyes. Gradually, the eyelids begin to itch, swell, and turn red. Eyelashes become thin and brittle and quickly fall out. In the morning, the edges of the eyelids are covered with sticky discharge, crusts and scales.

How does it work?

Metronidazole is a drug with an antibiotic effect. It effectively copes with various bacterial diseases. Today the drug exists in the form of a gel, tablets and solution.

The first two dosage forms are more suitable for home use. One of the main advantages of Metronidazole is its active impact on the causes of demodicosis. The active ingredients penetrate bacterial elements and quickly destroy them.

Also, after using the drug, there are no scars left on the joint, which is very important.

The medication has a broad spectrum of action, so it is often used in dermatology. Low price, good effect and the possibility of use for the treatment of many skin diseases make Metronidazole a unique drug.

In what cases is it prescribed

In addition to demodicosis, the drug is prescribed against:

  • impaired functionality of the gastrointestinal tract,
  • hormonal disorders, especially in adolescents,
  • dermatosis, especially chronic.

Also, the drug and drugs created on its basis effectively cope with:

  • amoebic organ damage,
  • giardiasis of the duodenum,
  • abscesses affecting bones and soft tissues,
  • skin infections
  • inflammation of the periosteum and bone structures,
  • colitis,
  • infectious infections after surgery.

For people who need treatment for demodicosis, it is better to take Metronidazole orally (tablets) or use it externally (Metrogil gel). A qualified specialist should decide which dosage form is most suitable. At the same time, he takes into account the degree of damage and the individual characteristics of the patient.

Instructions for use

Metronidazole should be used only as prescribed by a doctor. He will study the degree of development of demodicosis and develop a treatment regimen. The patient must only comply with all instructions. Let's look at the features of using gels and tablets.

Features of gel treatment

Metrogyl is sold without a prescription in every pharmacy. It is transparent and odorless.

To achieve a good effect, the substance must be used to treat areas of the CP affected by demodicosis, previously cleaned of dust and dirt. The doctor decides how many times a day this procedure should be performed.

The treatment course takes 21-30 days. Its duration can be adjusted. The gel is easy to use and does not cause discomfort.

How to take the pills

Separately or as an addition to external use, the doctor may prescribe tableted Metronidazole. As a rule, you need to take 250 mg tablets in the morning and evening for 7-10 days.

This treatment is prescribed to patients in whom demodicosis has led to the development of serious internal inflammation.

But often the tablets can be used to prepare emulsions, masks and lotions for topical use.

Recipe 1

To create an effective homemade lotion, grind 5 tablets into powder, add 100 ml of water, mix well. Soak a cotton pad in the prepared mixture and apply it to the affected skin. Carry out the procedure twice a day.

Recipe 2

Mix crushed tablets and white clay in equal quantities, add water to make the mixture slightly thick, stir. Wash, pat your face with a dry towel and apply the mask to the affected areas for 15 minutes. Then rinse off.

The duration of such treatment should only be determined by a doctor. Using Metronidazole in any form as self-medication can negatively affect your health.

Contraindications, restrictions

Despite its high effectiveness, Metronidazole is prohibited for use when:

  • pregnancy and lactation,
  • acute renal and liver failure,
  • hypersensitivity to the constituent components,
  • impaired functionality of the central nervous system,
  • chronic blood diseases.

Also, the medication is prohibited for use in the treatment of children and adolescents.

Side effects, consequences

In general, Metronidazole is well tolerated, but in some patients its use was accompanied by:

  • redness of the CP,
  • severe itching and burning,
  • general weakness.

Overdose also exhibits the same symptoms. Taking a large dose of Metronidazole causes loss of orientation, convulsive damage to the limbs and deterioration of the patient’s general condition.

Analogs

If for some reason the patient cannot be treated with Metronidazole, the doctor should prescribe a substitute.

Patient reviews

In general, patients call Metronidazole an effective drug. Some complained of the development of minor side effects in the form of itching or burning, which quickly passed. A small number of consumers report this drug to be ineffective.

Minimum cost: 20 rubles.

Why do you need to treat demodicosis?

Ignoring this disease will greatly aggravate the person’s condition and provoke the development of the following diseases.

Rosacea

The disease manifests itself as pustules, papules, rashes and skin inflammation. The face turns burgundy-red, the chest tightens, begins to itch and burn. Lack of adequate therapy will lead to thickening of the wings of the nose and an increase in its size. The disease can spread to the chest and back. The risk group includes fair-skinned women 30-50 years old.

Acne

It appears as flesh-colored nodules located in several groups on the face. May be accompanied by papules and pustules. A complex form of acne provokes the development of atrophic scars, bluish nodules and painful cysts. Acne most often appears on the cheeks, temples, upper back and chest. Black dots appear on the joint, it becomes lumpy, gradually becomes coarser and fatter.

Perioral dermatitis

It affects the nasolabial triangle, corners of the mouth, chin, head, and skin around the lips. It manifests itself as burgundy papules, persistent redness and pustules.

If left untreated, it enters an acute stage, which provokes the development of:

  • painful nodular neoplasms,
  • large pustules,
  • bluish rashes,
  • itching,
  • peeling,
  • dryness,
  • skin tightening.

Gradually, the KP becomes thin, opens the vascular network, and becomes covered with acne, pimples and rashes.

Seborrheic dermatitis

This disease manifests itself as pustules and papules that appear on the face, head, eyelids and eyebrows. Having become chronic, it affects:

  • chest,
  • armpits,
  • groin,
  • skin behind the ears.

A mild form of the disease can be confused with dandruff.

If left untreated, large scaly growths will affect the entire head. The KP under the crusts is red and inflamed. Since the skin is dry, bleeding microcracks appear on it, which constantly itch. The likelihood of contracting an infectious disease increases several times.

Demodicosis is a serious disease that requires qualified treatment. If you notice signs in yourself, do not rush to buy Metronidazole, but make an appointment with a dermatologist.

The best means

Spregal. This aerosol contains esbiol, which can infect the nervous system of ticks living under the skin. The effect is noticeable after the first use. It is best to treat your skin with this product in the evening. The skin must not be washed for twelve hours after treatment. Make sure that the drug vapors do not get into your nose, eyes or mouth. Spregal practically does not cause side effects, it can be used even by children. Contraindicated for bronchial asthma, bronchitis and during breastfeeding.

Benzyl benzoate. The drug is considered in demand because as soon as its active components come into contact with the tick, the parasite dies within thirty minutes.

Does not pose any danger to the human body. During treatment, the ointment must be rubbed over the entire face, avoiding the eyes.

The duration of treatment with this drug depends on how quickly the main symptoms of demodex (pimples, itching, inflammation) disappear. The course of treatment is two to three weeks. Allergic reactions are possible. Manifest in the form of itching and burning. In this case, treatment will need to be interrupted. During breastfeeding, pregnancy, with pustular reactions on the skin and for children under three years of age, the use of Benzyl benzoate is not recommended.

Permethrin ointment. Permethrin, on the basis of which the ointment is made, prevents adult ticks and their larvae from developing.

This ointment is used in combination with drugs that contain sulfur and antibiotics. The life cycle of the demodex mite is twenty-eight days, so it is necessary to apply ointment to the face every day for a month.

A few days after starting use, the symptoms of the disease will begin to decrease. Side effects occur only in very rare cases.

Ointment Yam. Before use, the pits must be thoroughly mixed and applied in a thin layer to the affected areas of the skin and two to four centimeters around it.

You need to treat the affected skin once or twice a day until the crust begins to separate. If they have not separated on the fourth and fifth days, then you should continue to use the ointment.

The affected areas are freed from crusts after seven to ten days. Side effects do not appear if the drug is used correctly.

Skinoren gel. The product has an antiseptic and disinfectant effect. Azelaic acid, which is part of the gel, helps normalize the functioning of the sebaceous glands and have an anti-inflammatory effect. It is impossible to completely get rid of adult ticks and their larvae using Skinoren.

Rosamet. For demodicosis, rozamet is an antiprotozoal agent.

Side effects cannot be ruled out, so the drug must be used with extreme caution

Permethrin for demodicosis

On the first night after diagnosis, treat demodicosis on your face with external cream Permethrin 5%, leave for 8-12 hours, then rinse. Repeat 1 week later. Some patients repeat the procedure weekly for a month.

This is a strong external preparation, it is very irritating to the skin, but is used rarely - only 2-4 times, and then only from time to time, for example, once a month at night, to control the number of demodex mites.

The next morning, be sure to use a moisturizer as Permethrin is a drying agent.

Ivermectin (topically)

The procedure for its use is similar to the procedure for treating Permethrin; the drugs are equally effective, although they act differently.

As a rule, the doctor uses one of these remedies in the treatment regimen for facial demodicosis at his own discretion. Permethrin is a more irritating substance, so use a humidifier as needed.

Using permethrin at night for 2 weeks is one of the more aggressive courses.

Metronidazole cream for demodicosis

Another drug is Metronidazole 0.75% cream. It is used as part of routine processing, incl. in the treatment of demodicosis of the eyelids. Apply to affected areas daily (once or twice a day) as needed.

It is an antibiotic/antimicrobial drug. It is the mainstay of typical rosacea treatment and can target demodex mites. Metronidazole is produced in the form of creams (as above) and also in the form of Metrogyl 1% gel.

It tends to dry out the skin and is usually used once a day. Most doctors encourage the use of Metronidazole cream or gel as maintenance therapy.

The patient should use the drug long-term as part of the demodex treatment regimen to reduce symptoms.

Hello. How can I use (how to apply them correctly so as not to get on the mucous membrane) these drugs for demodicosis of the eyelids. Thank you.

Features of the treatment of demodicosis with Metronidazole

When the skin is affected by acne mites, Metronidazole is often prescribed - for demodicosis this is one of the best, effective and inexpensive remedies. The drug is produced for external and internal use, which allows you to quickly get rid of the manifestations of dermatological pathology.

What is the mechanism of action of Trichopolum?

Trichopolum (an analogue of Metronidazole) for demodicosis should be taken together with local treatment in order to potentiate and consolidate the therapeutic effects of the prescribed drugs. The acaricidal (tick-targeted) effect of Trichopolum is not the main principle of the drug. More often in clinical practice, antiprotozoal, anthelmintic, and antibacterial properties are used.

The mechanism of the antiparasitic effect is due to the fact that Trichopolum and its structural analogues directly suppress the synthesis of ribonucleic and deoxyribonucleic acids (RNA, DNA), which carry the genetic information of parasites. That is, at this stage, life, as well as the reproduction of ticks, is inhibited.

But the effect of the drug is not limited to the effect against parasites. Trichopolum can quite successfully fight bacteria. According to one version of the development of demodicosis, they may be to blame for the occurrence of pathology of the skin and eyes, and mites are only “conductors” to the deep layers of the skin.
