Geranium, or pelargonium, is a unique plant that amazes not only with its beauty, but also with its miraculous healing properties. In Europe they learned about this flower only in the 17th century. However, it immediately gained popularity.
At first, geranium was used to decorate courtyard gardens, and then (more precisely, in the Victorian era) people began to produce fragrant essential oil from it. This oil was used to treat headaches, fractures, insomnia, and ENT problems.
It was used to purify the air and to neutralize certain toxic substances. In the modern world, geranium ether is in demand in the field of cosmetology, in particular, for solving skin problems, as it is able to heal and rejuvenate the skin of the face.
Description
Two varieties of pelargonium are suitable for making oil: pink and lemon. The ground part is used as raw material - petals, stems and leaves, cut at the time of flowering. Processing is carried out by steam distillation, and to obtain 1 ml of oil, about a kilogram of fresh raw materials is required.
As a result of processing, an oily liquid of yellow-green color is obtained. The color saturation can vary, from pale to quite dark. The oil has a pronounced floral-fruity aroma. The resulting ester dissolves well in any base oils and mixes with other esters.
The composition of geranium oil is quite complex; it contains more than a hundred different ingredients that are beneficial for the skin. Including tocopherol, known as the “vitamin of youth”. Another component that promotes epidermal cell renewal is geraniol. This alcohol has a pleasant aroma and has pronounced antiseptic properties.

Cosmetic properties of geranium oil
At the beginning of the nineteenth century, geranium essential oil was first produced in Paris, which French cosmetologists, well aware of the beneficial properties of the plant, immediately did not fail to use.
- The oil promotes cell health, stimulates the disposal of dead cells and the regeneration of new ones.
- Geranium oil is considered one of the most effective remedies in the fight against cellulite.
- Thanks to its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, this cosmetic product can provide significant assistance in the treatment of acne and pimples.
- Also, geranium essential oil will replenish the lack of vitamins in the skin, moisturize it and remove flaking.
- Due to its soothing properties, it is good to use to relieve skin irritation.
- Tones the skin, relieves swelling.
Terms of use
When planning to use geranium oil against wrinkles, you must first study the rules for using the product and become familiar with the precautions.
Remember! Geranium oil, like other essential oils, cannot be used undiluted on the face. If this prohibition is violated, severe skin irritation may occur. It is important to avoid getting ether on mucous membranes and, especially, eyes. This product can be applied undiluted only pointwise, using a cotton swab. This targeted application will speed up the healing of acne.
When preparing cosmetic formulations, you should avoid the temptation to change the recipe by adding more essential oil. Such a change in composition will not make the procedure more effective, but it may cause harm to the skin.
Geranium oil mixes well with other essential oils, however, you should not create too complex compositions yourself. The maximum number of esters that can be mixed in one composition is seven. But it’s better to limit yourself to 2-4 types.
The prepared formulations should be applied to well -cleansed skin . To get the best results, it is recommended to pre-steam the skin, this will allow the pores to open.

Reviews
Karina: “I couldn’t even think that essential oil is made from geranium until I accidentally read about its medicinal qualities. As it turned out, it has a great effect on problematic dermis, which I happen to be the owner of. This is how I became acquainted with the best cosmetic product at the moment. Just a few drops of this valuable liquid turns any cream into a real fighter against inflammation and comedones. Just one ten-day course every two months is enough to completely cleanse the face, and at the same time make the skin more elastic.”
Diana: “Having an arsenal of essential oils, I have already studied which product is best used for what purpose. I can give advice to those with oily skin: be sure to pay attention to geranium oil if you have never used it before. It is even used to treat dermatological diseases. After treatment with the product, acne goes away without a trace in a couple of days, and all thanks to the powerful antimicrobial and healing effect.”
Ulyana: “How to effectively care for your skin by turning ordinary procedures into an aromatherapy session? Just buy yourself pelargonium oil, a plant commonly known as geranium. Its pleasant smell lifts your spirits and relieves anxiety. And if you prepare a mask with this substance, you can rejuvenate, lighten age spots and clear the skin of any rashes.”
Geranium ether has been known for its healing properties for a long time. In folk medicine, it is used as an anesthetic, for healing wounds, and preventing respiratory diseases. But it is no less useful when used for cosmetic purposes, helping to fight acne, dermatological diseases, post-acne and other problems.
Precautionary measures
Before you start using geranium oil, be sure to check how your skin reacts to contact with this substance. Drop a little ether on your wrist and watch how the skin reacts. If no discomfort or redness appears within 24 hours, then the product is safe for you.
In addition, pelargonium oil is prohibited from being used:
- during pregnancy and, especially, in the first trimester;
- for diabetes mellitus;
- while taking hormonal birth control pills.
It is not recommended to use pelargonium ether for too long; the maximum duration of the course is three weeks, with the frequency of procedures being no more than twice a week. With more frequent or longer use, skin irritation may occur.
Features and contraindications
- Pregnant and nursing mothers should avoid geranium oil.
- Contraindicated for infants and children under 6 years of age.
- Geranium essential oil can only be applied to the skin in diluted form.
- If you are hypersensitive, do not use.
Geranium essential oil can change your mood, calm or invigorate. Try using it on your skin and feel its “tightening” effect. Refresh your home, fill it with the fragrance of a delicate, modest flower, ready to “compete” with the aroma of the rose itself.

Add three drops of geranium essential oil. Apply for twenty minutes. This composition is suitable for sensitive epidermis, which often experiences irritation.
Application for skin care around the eyes
In cosmetology, geranium essential oil is rarely used in its pure form. It is usually added to some kind of base that serves as a base, for example, sea buckthorn, almond or other neutral oil. The base is often jojoba oil, avocado oil, or obtained from grape or peach seeds.
Pelargonium essential oil “gets along” perfectly with ready-made cosmetics and perfumes - soap, cream, lotion, shampoos, bath products, without at all impairing their properties, but only improving them. Sometimes 2 drops of such a fragrant potion per 30 ml of cream or lotion is enough, and the new magical composition is ready to effectively care for your face.
To prepare this composition, you can take 2 tsp. jojoba oil, add a couple of drops of geranium oil and one drop of sandalwood oil. Apply the resulting mask to your face, and it is recommended to do this 2-3 times a week and no more often. Cosmetologists advise after such a mask to try not to be in the sun for at least half an hour.
This healing composition will help soothe sensitive skin, relieve inflammation or irritation: mix 2 drops of cajuput and lavender oils with 1 drop of geranium and the same amount of cedar. The resulting mixture has excellent antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, so the skin will be clean and soft, and inflammatory processes will not appear on it.
If the skin on your face has become loose, you can also help it. To do this, you need to combine various essential oils: 1 tsp. jojoba oil, 2 drops each of geranium and rosemary, 1 drop of tangerine.
The following cosmetic composition will help smooth out all the wrinkles that have treacherously “crept” onto a woman’s face: combine 5 drops of lavender and geranium and 10 drops of rose and incense. Mix all the ingredients, apply the composition to the face and massage lightly, paying special attention to those areas of the face where wrinkles have already “settled”.
Geranium essential oil is an excellent moisturizer and emollient. Therefore, it will help skin that is flaky, dry and rough. To solve this problem, cosmetology offers a truly magical potion: add 2 drops each of rose, geranium and sweet dill oil to 25 ml of avocado oil.
If pimples or blackheads have been “settled” on your face for a long time, then daily use of a self-prepared cream will help you quickly get rid of them. It is prepared as follows: add a couple of drops of geranium oil and one drop each of cloves and chamomile to 10 ml of any base.
To support aging skin, cosmetologists recommend trying to make this mask every day: add 2 drops of rose and 4 drops of geranium to 30 ml of regular olive oil. Geranium essential oil is good because it can remove fine wrinkles, renew epidermal cells, thereby toning the skin and restoring its firmness and elasticity.
To care for your skin every day, you can use a very useful nourishing cream: mix jojoba, avocado, and hazelnut oils, taking 10 ml of each. Add 1 drop of geranium, vanilla and jasmine oil and 3 drops of orange and rose to the resulting composition.
Geranium essential oil will also help chapped hands. You just need to add a couple of drops of it to thick sour cream, make yourself “gloves”, and wash them off after half an hour.
In general, this miraculous essential oil can be used in a variety of ways for the benefit of your beauty and health.
Traditional medicine never stands still, and from year to year the use of traditional medicine for the skin is becoming more and more popular. Forgotten grandmother's homemade recipes are remembered, and new and improved ones are created. Therefore, there are now a huge variety of skin care products.

It is important to know which essential oils are beneficial for facial skin, as well as how to use them so as not to cause more harm. Each skin type requires a specific approach.
Normal skin also needs proper and comprehensive care. It needs to be regularly toned, moisturized, and protected. Girls with this type will benefit from universal geranium oil, as well as rosemary, rose and tea tree oils. At a young age, a combined variant often occurs, then certain areas, for example, the forehead and nose, become very oily. With the right approach, your skin will become normal. Then you can use bergamot, ylang-ylang or mint ether.
Normal skin also needs proper and comprehensive care. Girls with this type will benefit from universal geranium oil, as well as rosemary, rose and tea tree oils.
Essential oils are also useful for dry facial skin. This type of skin is vulnerable and susceptible to external influences. It flakes, and since it lacks moisture, it looks dehydrated and thinned. Such skin begins to fade early and becomes covered with wrinkles. Therefore, it is so important that regular care includes nutrition, hydration, and stabilization of fat production.
Dry skin responds well to the effects of oils. In some cases better than cream. Olive oil is particularly effective. It is applied in the mornings and evenings. It contains proteins, fatty acids and vitamins.

Oily skin requires a lot of attention. It shows pimples, unsightly shine and clogged pores. The advantage of such skin is that wrinkles appear on it quite late.
Fir, chamomile, mint and juniper oils are suitable for oily skin
Essential oils for oily facial skin are used to normalize the production of sebaceous glands, for easy drying and to eliminate inflammatory processes. Fir, chamomile, mint and juniper oil have a similar effect. Lemon and lavender oil are used to prevent wrinkles. Ginger, thyme and lemon balm have tonic properties.
It is not so easy to choose essential oils for problematic facial skin. Some of them are able to cope with even the most difficult cases. Clove oil helps remove various skin lesions, ulcers and boils. Geranium helps normalize the production of sebaceous glands. Particularly suitable for those whose skin tends to be oily. This product helps even if some parts are dry and the rest are very greasy.
Cedar oil will help with acne. And lavender is worth choosing if you need to remove inflammation or cleanse the skin.

For such skin, you should select esters that have a calming effect. These include lavender, mint or chamomile. A few drops a day will significantly improve the condition of the skin.
Cream or full-fat milk are considered excellent solvents for esters for delicate skin.
For sensitive skin, esters should not be mixed with alcohols, as well as with components containing fruit acids, animal fats or mineral components (paraffin, petrolatum, petroleum jelly). All these additions will cause more harm.
Essential oil is used not only for the skin of the face, but also for the eyes. But in this case, the application requires a special approach. The skin in this area is very delicate and thin, so products must be selected very carefully. It is near the eyes that wrinkles most often appear, because the eyes are always in motion.
The skin around the eyes needs to be toned and nourished. Rose, sandalwood, neroli or tea tree oil will help with this.
Signs of aging can appear very early if the skin is dry and inelastic. Therefore, it needs to be toned and nourished. Rose, sandalwood, neroli or tea tree oil will help with this. Any of the selected products must be diluted with the base component. It can be avocado oil, jojoba oil or regular olive oil.
Cosmetologists' opinion
Experts confirm that geranium oil helps smooth out wrinkles. However, you shouldn't count on a miracle. To achieve truly good results, you need comprehensive skin care. In addition, we must not forget about caution, pelargonium ether is a concentrated substance, so it is not suitable for everyone. Do not use this ether too long and often, take breaks between courses. For most, this regimen is suitable - 2-3 weeks of use, then a 2-3 month break.
How are oils used for rejuvenation?

How to use
Place a few drops of geranium in a diffuser or on a napkin; as the vapor evaporates, it sends messages to the limbic system that allow you to better control your emotions and consciousness. By inhaling geranium oil, you can improve your heart rhythm, normalize your breathing rate, blood pressure and strengthen your immune defense.
Influencing the nervous system, it eliminates depressed and depressed states and causeless anxiety, and dramatically improves emotional mood. The aroma of geranium oil increases endurance and activates attention. Children calm down and become less whiny. With its help it is easy to achieve beautiful and glowing skin.
Storage
To preserve the beneficial properties and aroma of geranium oil, it must be stored in a dark bottle at room temperature. The product must not be frozen! Pelargonium extract deteriorates with prolonged contact with air, so it is necessary to carefully close the container with oil. Shelf life is about 5 years.
Contraindications
It is not recommended to take geranium oil internally during pregnancy. It affects hormonal levels and can negatively affect the course of pregnancy. External use of highly diluted oil is allowed. In the third trimester of pregnancy, you can use geranium for aromatherapy. Oil baths are not recommended during pregnancy. During lactation, pelargonium extract significantly reduces milk production, so it should be used with caution. It is not advisable to take geranium oil simultaneously with oral contraceptives.
- The oil should not be given to children under 6 years of age.
- The course of internal administration should not exceed 3 - 4 weeks, since the extract can significantly reduce blood sugar levels with long-term use.
- It is not allowed to use the oil internally on an empty stomach.
- If allergic reactions occur, you should stop using geranium.
- If heartburn occurs, it is necessary to reduce the consumed dose of oil.
An ordinary geranium - a flower loved by our mothers and grandmothers - can bring considerable benefits to the body. The essential oil of this plant can be used internally and externally to treat colds, inflammation, restore women's health, menopause and infertility. External use of the oil helps to cope with acne and rosacea; it will be useful for restoring dry hair, getting rid of cellulite and other problems with the skin of the body. Aromatherapy with pelargonium oil helps restore strength and eliminate fatigue.
Application for skin care around the eyes
Ticks (like many other insects) cannot stand the smell of geranium! You can make your own anti-tick remedy with geranium oil. To do this, mix 2 tsp. EM with 200 ml. water, pour into a spray bottle and use as a spray. The spray is easy to use: you can spray clothes, hair and various objects with it.
You can make your own geranium essential oil by growing several pelargonium (geranium) bushes at home.
To prepare one ml of geranium oil with your own hands, you will need about 0.9-1 kg of greenery and flowers collected during the flowering period of the plant.
There are two methods for preparing this oil:
- Steam method.
- Infusion method.
Let's look at both of them.
The first method is steam
- We wash, dry and chop the leaves and geranium flowers.
- Place the raw material in a glass jar and fill it with water so that it is submerged.
- We make a hole in the lid of the jar, insert a thin tube and seal it tightly.
- We lower the outer end of the tube into a small dark bottle, which must be placed in a glass half filled with ice.
- We close the jar with a lid with a tube in a water bath. As the contents of the jar heat up, droplets of ether will appear in the bottle.
This method is inconvenient because to obtain a tiny amount of oil you will need a lot of raw materials: for example, to produce a standard 10 ml of product, you will need 10 kg of raw materials. It is unlikely that anyone will have such a number of plants. Therefore, to obtain homemade geranium oil, it is better to use infusion.
The second method is infusion
- Grind 200 grams of geranium flowers and leaves.
- Fill the raw material with 250 ml of vodka or alcohol.
- Close the container tightly and place it in a sunny window for two weeks.
- Pour in 50 ml of olive or peach oil and keep in the same place for another two weeks.
The output is a yellowish oil of medium concentration; just like essential oil, it is suitable for the preparation of cosmetics.
