Folk remedies, medicines, ointments for the treatment of molluscum contagiosum

The skin is one of the largest systems of the human body, but it is also considered one of the most vulnerable. This is due to frequent skin contact with various types of pathogens (infections, viruses, fungi, and so on). The body has to come into contact with this every day.

But sometimes the “protection” in the form of the skin does not cope with its task and is exposed to various viruses, including molluscum contagiosum. This is a common disease that is accompanied by a rash on the patient's skin. Typically, this rash occurs on the most sensitive areas of the body. More information about the treatment of mollusks on the body will be discussed in this article.

Oxolinic ointment for the treatment of molluscum

The drug is antiviral, intended for local use. The main active ingredient is naphthalene. Can be used by children from 2 years of age and adults. Apply 3-4 times a day, carry out the procedure carefully to damage the papules. After application, the rashes may become inflamed and darken; this is a normal reaction. Regeneration processes are taking place. The crusts that have formed cannot be peeled off.

Acyclovir

Antiviral drug. The active substance is acyclovir. Prescribed to adults and children. Can be applied up to 5 times a day. Actively blocks the reproduction of viral particles of molluscum contagiosum. Prevents the formation of new foci of rash, reduces the likelihood of visceral complications, and accelerates the process of crust formation. Very rarely, side effects such as burning and allergic reactions may develop. If such symptoms appear, the drug should be discontinued and consult a specialist.

Symptoms of molluscum contagiosum on the penis

From the moment of infection to the appearance of the first signs of infection, it takes from 2 to 25 weeks. At the end of the incubation period, dense small nodules are formed in the area of the skin where the pathogen has penetrated - up to three millimeters in diameter. They tend to increase up to 1 cm within 3-6 months. The pathology can be leveled out on its own without drug treatment.

After recovery, lifelong resistance to the virus develops. Secondary infection is observed only in exceptional situations against the background of provoking factors: a sharp decrease in immunity, severe chronic diseases. If the nodules do not disappear on their own, then self-infection cannot be ruled out. In this case, the appearance of new tumors is observed.

It’s worth knowing: molluscum contagiosum is not a dangerous pathology; it tends to go away on its own when the immune system suppresses the activity of the virus. Dense nodules, as a rule, do not bother the patient - there is no itching, burning, or pain. For the most part, they are a cosmetic problem that causes psychological discomfort.

The dominant symptom is growths on the penis. They appear gradually and grow slowly. On average, 5-15 nodules are diagnosed per patient. In some situations their number amounts to tens (rarely). At first they are small in size, but within 3-6 months they increase to 3-10 mm. Individual elements grow up to 15 mm.

Against the background of molluscum contagiosum, all rashes on the penis are of different sizes, but have the same appearance. When neoplasms develop close to each other, they merge into large surfaces up to 4-5 centimeters. Such formations are susceptible to inflammation and can fester, which leads to the formation of crusts and ulcerative skin lesions.

Features of rashes on the penis with molluscum contagiosum:

  • Regardless of the stage of the disease, blisters always protrude above the skin;
  • The edges are smooth, the consistency is dense;
  • The shade is pearlescent or pink;
  • There is a small depression in the center of the nodule;
  • If you press on the nodule, it contains epithelial cells and particles of the pathogen;
  • The skin around the tumors does not change.

These symptoms describe the classic picture of molluscum contagiosum on the penis. In medical practice, there is a giant form - one nodule appears, but of a large size - from 20 cm. They also distinguish the pedicular form - large nodes are formed by the merging of small rashes. There are other types of the disease, but they do not affect the genital area.

Viferon for molluscum contagiosum

Has a pronounced antiviral effect. The active substance is interferon alfa-2b. Prescribed to children from 1 year and adults. Advantages of the drug:

  • allows you to reduce the dose of antibacterial and hormonal agents;
  • increases the body's immune defense;
  • stops the spread of the rash;
  • has no side effects.

Apply 3-4 times a day to the rash.

It is recommended to begin use at the first sign of the appearance of molluscum contagiosum.

Which doctors should you contact if you have molluscum contagiosum?

  • Dermatologist

Diagnosis of the disease is based on the clinical picture, and also uses the immunofluorescence method to detect circulating antibodies in the blood and microscopy to detect mollusk bodies.

Neoplasms with molluscum contagiosum are differentiated from:

  • common and flat warts,
  • genital warts,
  • acne,
  • milia,
  • folliculitis,
  • basal cell carcinoma,
  • keratoacanth,
  • allergic dermatitis,
  • syringum,
  • juvenile and amelanotic melanoma.

Tebrofen ointment 5%

Local antiviral agent. Stimulates protective functions and regeneration processes. To treat molluscum contagiosum you will need two ointments. First, the affected areas are treated with salicylic ointment 3-5%, and then tebrofen ointment 5% is rubbed in. The period of use is 2 weeks; if necessary, the course of therapy will have to be repeated. After physical procedures and removal of papules, disinfectant solutions and ointments are needed; in some cases, the use of antibiotics may be necessary.

Traditional methods of treatment with plant juices

Treatment of molluscum contagiosum with herbs and medicinal plants is no less effective than medication. For these purposes, well-tested folk remedies are used: tincture of garlic, decoction of string, bird cherry and celandine juice, as well as various collections of medicinal herbs.

Treatment with garlic

Crush the garlic with a spoon until a paste forms, then mix in equal parts with butter. The product is applied to the affected skin 4 times a day and left for 15 minutes. Then wash off with warm water. The course of treatment is about a month. According to another recipe, the garlic is cut into slices and its juice is rubbed directly into the papules. In this case, a burning sensation is possible. The procedure must be carried out daily until crusts appear on the growth and it begins to dry out.

Celandine juice

It burns warts well and helps them dry out and die. It must be applied to each papule for 7 days. You can use a ready-made compound from a pharmacy or make it yourself. Causes a small burn, followed by death of the nodules. Apply 1 drop with a special stick 1 time per day. As a rule, on the third day the papilloma dies.

Series

2 tablespoons of herbs are poured into 200 ml of boiling water. Leave in a water bath for a quarter of an hour and cool at room temperature for 45 minutes. Apply to contagious nodules in the form of lotions or compresses. The duration of treatment is until the contents of the papule come out and the nodule heals.

Bird cherry fragrant

Has a healing effect. The method of preparation and application is the same as for the series.

Potassium permangantsovka

Another popular method of treating molluscum contagiosum. Manganese permanganate (potassium permanganate) dries the skin and has an antimicrobial effect. To combat formations, you need to make a dark pink solution and lubricate the affected areas with it until crusts form.

Feresol

The medicine is intended for external use only in adult patients. Has a cauterizing, bactericidal effect. Apply pointwise so as not to touch healthy areas of the skin. The procedure is carried out in a medical institution under the supervision of a doctor. Within 10-60 minutes, the solution is applied to the papules, it should dry. The procedure is repeated after 2 weeks if necessary. Treated skin areas should not be covered with a bandage. Re-process no earlier than after 14 days. Do not apply any products, just rinse with water. It is advisable to avoid contact with synthetic clothing.

Chlorophyllipt

The solution has antibacterial, antistaphylococcal properties. Accelerates regeneration processes. Contains eucalyptus essential oil, organic acids, tannins. The product increases tissue resistance to hypoxia. The lesion site is treated after the removal procedure. Do not use in case of an allergic reaction or intolerance to the constituent components. Apply gently to the skin with a cotton swab moistened with a solution 2 times a day.

Removal methods

The traditional way to eliminate molluscum contagiosum is mechanical removal. This treatment is carried out according to the following algorithm:

  • the surface of the formation on the skin is lubricated with a local antiseptic (iodine, alcohol or betadine).
  • The neoplasm is compressed with a scalpel from both sides until a curdled mass begins to come out. If this cannot be achieved, the top of the mollusk is carefully cut off. There is no need to use local anesthesia because the procedure causes virtually no discomfort to the patient.
  • The maximum amount of cheesy discharge is extracted by squeezing the skin growth. Then the doctor removes the remaining secretion with a special cuvette. It scrapes off a small amount of healthy tissue that was in close proximity to the source of infection and affected by the virus.
  • The treated area is generously lubricated with a local anesthetic, for example, a solution of iodine or brilliant green, and a gauze bandage is applied to it.

After surgical treatment, the patient must treat the surgical site with an anesthetic at least twice a day in the first 5-7 days. Then the procedure is carried out once a day until the operated area is completely healed.

Practice shows that complete healing of the skin requires 2-3 weeks. The advantage of mechanical treatment is the speed of getting rid of the defect, its disadvantage is the high probability of scarring. The larger the tumor, the greater the risk that the patient will be left with a noticeable scar.

Laser therapy

Laser removal of molluscum contagiosum is a modern and effective treatment method. The advantages of the procedure include the following:

  • low likelihood of scarring;
  • painlessness (manipulations can be performed under local anesthesia);
  • high healing rate;
  • absence of direct contact between the device and the skin, reducing the likelihood of infection to zero;
  • minimum number of contraindications.

To combat the tumor, the doctor directs a beam of photons of the required length to the site of infection. The likelihood of blood loss is minimal because the blood vessels are “sealed” under the influence of the beam. The duration of the therapeutic effect is no more than 10 minutes.

The laser beam destroys the vast majority of virions located on the skin and prevents the infection from spreading to surrounding tissues. Due to its high precision, the procedure is often used on “delicate” areas, for example, to remove molluscum contagiosum on the eyelid and other parts.

Electrocoagulation

An effective way to get rid of molluscum contagiosum is electrocoagulation. This is the effect on the tumor of electric current waves of different intensity and frequency. When they come into contact with the skin, they are transformed into thermal energy, which cauterizes tissue affected by the virus. Heavy bleeding does not occur, because... the vessels are “sealed” under the influence of high temperature.

The advantages of electrocoagulation for removing skin elements of molluscum contagiosum include the following:

  • accuracy of impact;
  • the ability to fully control the progress of the procedure;
  • low risk of scar formation;
  • safety;
  • the opportunity to take material for histology.

After removal, the operated area is lubricated with an antiseptic and covered with a gauze bandage. For 2-3 weeks, it requires special care, including the use of healing ointments and disinfectants. The result of exposure and the need for repeated electrocoagulation is assessed after a week.

Cryotherapy

Cryodestruction of molluscum contagiosum is its treatment with low temperature nitrogen. It is applied to the affected area using a spray or cotton swabs. Under the influence of cold, the neoplasm dies. It turns white, and along with it a certain amount of surrounding tissue. After 5-7 days, the growth disappears spontaneously, leaving no scars or scars.

Cryodestruction is often used to remove various forms of molluscum contagiosum because it has the following advantages:

  • safety;
  • low probability that cosmetic defects will remain;
  • no bleeding during operations;
  • speed (it takes no more than 5-10 minutes to remove the tumor).

Cryotherapy is accompanied by a minimal amount of discomfort. The patient feels a slight burning sensation and coldness.

As a rule, one session is not enough to remove molluscum contagiosum.

The patient is prescribed 2-3 procedures, which are carried out at intervals of one week. When the skin growth disappears, the source of infection is destroyed.

Ultrasound therapy

If the patient has molluscum contagiosum located on the head or face (for example, an eyelid lesion), it is important that after its removal there are no scars left. For these purposes, a modern high-precision technique for combating tumors is used - ultrasound therapy.

This is the use of a device called “Surgitron”, which makes it possible to produce concentrated ultrasound radiation that carefully and directionally dissects the affected tissue. The procedure allows you to make minimal incisions (up to one thousandth of a millimeter), which heal quickly (7-10 days), without leaving scars or other cosmetic defects.

Levomekol

Antimicrobial combination ointment. Can be used after curettage and as a healing agent, in alternation with other drugs:

  • Feresol;
  • Betadine;
  • Salicylic acid;
  • Silver nitrate.

Apply a thin layer, cover with a bandage. Should not be used in the eye area.

Ointments for molluscum contagiosum, which have antiviral properties, are effective in the first stages of the disease.

Course of the disease in children

The disease does not cause severe itching, pain or discomfort in the child. After a virus attack, the disease usually develops within 2 to 8 weeks. Final recovery occurs between 12 and 18 weeks.

In extremely rare cases, the disease lasts from a year to 4 years. In children, when fully mature, the mollusks look like convex pimples with a diameter of up to 8 mm. When drained, they form rashes and plaques.

Infection in 80% of 100 manifests itself before the age of 15, but is more often found in children under 4 years of age.

The disease may take the form:

  • multiple rashes
  • individual nodes up to 10 mm in diameter, sitting “on a leg”
  • very large plaques in the form of growths that are formed by the fusion of small ones

Parents are always interested in how to get rid of molluscum contagiosum in children faster, but it is more important to control that children do not scratch the nodules and cause infection.

Molluscum contagiosum is not dangerous, and the rash disappears without treatment within a year, sometimes a year and a half. The introduction of infection into nodules combed by a child is dangerous.

Top

Sinaflan

Local hormonal ointment. Has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory properties. Quickly eliminates swelling and inflammatory processes. Not recommended for use in women during pregnancy. Hormones can have a negative impact on fetal development. Use for children only as prescribed by a doctor. There is a risk of dependence on the drug.

Treatment of molluscum contagiosum with ointments is sometimes not effective, so the doctor prescribes additional broad-spectrum antibacterial drugs.

Isoprinosine

Immunostimulating antiviral agent. Allows you to speed up the healing process. Children are prescribed 0.5 tablets per 5 kg of body weight 3-4 times a day, adults 2 tablets 3 times a day. In combination with physical procedures it gives a lasting positive effect. It is recommended to start taking it when the first symptoms of the disease appear.

To treat molluscum contagiosum, the drug must be selected and prescribed by a doctor. This especially applies to drugs containing hormones.

How to treat?

If research results confirm the presence of this type of rash, but there are no malignant or benign formations, then in such cases molluscum contagiosum may not be treated. The human immune system is able to cope with this phenomenon on its own, so the use of special medications is not required.

As a rule, the body copes with the disease within 6 months. But in other cases, treatment is necessary. For this, not only traditional therapy is used, but also proven folk remedies, which include various medicinal plants.

Medicines

Various ointments are often used to treat molluscum contagiosum, but only after examination by a doctor. Alternatively, squeeze out the accumulated white mass from the nodule, thoroughly clean its middle using a special spoon and treat with iodine or alcohol. Many doctors recommend using liquid nitrogen to remove molluscum contagiosum, but this method is not always effective.

The fact is that with the help of liquid nitrogen it is not always possible to eliminate nodules completely. Therefore, current therapy is often used instead. This method is not bad for treating minor affected areas of the skin, but in other cases, a dermatologist recommends taking a course of antibiotics.

Along with drug treatment, it is necessary to process the sick patient’s belongings, carry out general cleaning of the apartment or house, and perform disinfection. In general, follow all steps that will help get rid of dust, since it may contain a virus.

Folk remedies

Folk remedies are quite effective in the fight against molluscum contagiosum. Their essence lies in the bactericidal effect on the body and disinfection of the upper layers of the epidermis.

The most common recipes for folk remedies:

  • treat the affected areas of the skin daily with calendula oil, and also cauterize the nodules with a special alcohol tincture of calendula;
  • After chopping fresh bird cherry leaves, place them on cheesecloth and squeeze out the juice. It must be kept in the refrigerator so that the juice does not spoil. Rub into the skin after you squeeze out the knots;
  • mix butter with juice from bird cherry leaves in equal proportions. Apply the prepared product to the affected skin every evening before bed. Secure with a bandage, and in the morning you can remove it;
  • Finely chop one head of garlic, after peeling it. Add 20 grams of butter to the garlic and mix the ingredients thoroughly. The prepared ointment should be applied to the affected areas of the skin 3 times a day. If this does not give a positive result or your skin turns out to be resistant to irritation, then you can lubricate your skin with pure garlic juice;
  • prepare a strong solution of potassium permanganate and lubricate the formed nodules on the skin with it several times a day. This remedy works great against molluscum contagiosum.

Medicinal herbs

Medicinal plants also work well with shellfish on the body:

  • pour 200 grams of boiling water over 30 grams of herb and cook over low heat until boiling. Then leave the product for an hour. Treat the skin with the prepared product 3 times a day;
  • Prepare a decoction of bird cherry leaves. This remedy is very helpful in treating various skin diseases. To prepare the decoction, you need to pour 400 grams of boiling water over 100 grams of crushed bird cherry leaves and leave for 40 minutes. Then lubricate the nodules on the skin several times a day;
  • to prepare an herbal mixture, you need to mix juniper berries, pine buds, yarrow grass, birch buds, calendula flowers and eucalyptus leaves in equal proportions. Grind the finished mixture thoroughly. Now pour 200 grams of boiling water into 1 tablespoon of herbal mixture and leave for 1 hour. After this, the product must be filtered and taken as an external remedy to treat the affected areas of the skin. You can also take it orally 2 times a day, 100 grams. The duration of the course of therapy is 2 weeks.

Other recommendations

In parallel with treatment, you need to do your best to strengthen the immune system. To do this, it is advisable to regularly take vitamin complexes, lead a healthy lifestyle, and also follow a diet. Your diet should be complete and balanced, that is, your diet should contain a large amount of vitamin-rich foods. This especially applies to the winter period, when the human body is still very weak.

Untimely or improper treatment of molluscs on the body can lead to unpleasant consequences. For example, itching often occurs in the affected areas of the skin, and when scratching it, the patient can introduce an infection into the body. The fact is that the sacs with liquid, which are damaged when combed, contain the virus.

As a result, an inflammatory process occurs on the skin, which is accompanied by the formation of ulcers or swelling. Therefore, you should be extremely careful. Do not forget that such skin lesions often leave marks on the body in the form of small scars.

Doxycycline

Antibacterial drug. The course of treatment is 5 days. Can be used in combination with hormonal ointments. Often prescribed for the treatment of molluscum contagiosum on the genitals, face, and lower abdomen. Peculiarities:

  • allows you to quickly stop the spread of the disease;
  • not prescribed to children;
  • there are contraindications;
  • possible side effects;
  • The antibiotic can be used to treat affected areas in the form of a solution.

Causes

Molluscum contagiosum is a viral skin disease that can be transmitted from a sick person to a healthy person. It is worth noting that children get molluscum much more often than adults. To become infected with the molluscum contagiosum virus, it is enough to touch any household items that the patient has touched. This could be a handkerchief, a towel, and so on. As for adults, they most often become infected with this infection during sexual intercourse. Mollusks cannot be transmitted from animals to humans.

Most often, the disease can be picked up in various public places, for example, in a bathhouse, in a swimming pool or in a gym. Unfortunately, it is impossible to completely eliminate the virus, since its particles are embedded in the DNA structure. But at the same time, a person can avoid the occurrence of the disease thanks to a strong immune system. The mechanism of skin damage is influenced by how molluscum contagiosum managed to penetrate the patient’s body.

The appearance of a virus can occur for various reasons, for example, due to a weak immune system, when the body had to spend all its strength in the fight against some illness. Also, a rash can form as a result of damage to the body by another type of infection, for example, the development of HIV can contribute to this.

Biseptol

Used in complex therapy. Less effective than previously described modern drugs. Allows you to get rid of pathogenic microorganisms. Inhibits the formation of new lesions, stops the growth of molluscum contagiosum, and restores the body's protective functions. Used only if you are intolerant to other antibacterial drugs. Used to treat formations on the face, genitals, and eyes. Can be used as an auxiliary antibacterial therapy.

To cure molluscum contagiosum, ointments are recommended to be used at the first signs of the disease. In advanced cases, complex treatment is recommended using physical procedures, antibacterial therapy, and the use of drugs that increase the body's immune defense.

Conservative therapy

This is one of the areas of successful treatment of molluscum. During such therapy, all kinds of drugs with antiviral and immune activity are prescribed. These can be ointments against molluscum contagiosum, creams or gels. Therapy may continue for several weeks.

Modern treatment of immunocompromised individuals is not complete without interferon replacement therapy. In complex treatment of the disease, such drugs are often used. At the first stage of treatment, surgical methods for eliminating the mollusk are used. But this is only symptomatic therapy, which gives a temporary effect. It is necessary to prevent the reappearance of signs of the disease. To do this, you need to use interferon medications. They destroy the virus at the moment of its activation, preventing its reappearance.

Interferon (viferon) is a natural antiviral agent that actively fights all forms of infection. By activating the immune system, the body is reliably protected from all infections, including hidden ones. Medicines have unique abilities, minimizing the manifestations of the disease in a short time. To enhance the effect of therapy, experts recommend combining interferon agents. Along with the systemic use of medications, it is necessary to smear the affected skin with interferon ointments or creams.

An initially healthy body is able to overcome the infection itself. It may take the body about six months to overcome the symptoms of the virus. Dermatologists do not prescribe drug therapy, but monitor the body’s defenses and the course of the disease. Medicines can only be used to speed up the healing process.
