What is a lipoma or wen? It is a soft, mobile, elastic, painless tumor (benign connective tissue tumor), consisting of a clot of adipose tissue.
It develops in the shallow layers of connective subcutaneous fat, but can penetrate deeper into the layers of muscle tissue and vascular bundles.
The degeneration of wen into malignant tumors occurs quite rarely. But still sometimes it happens.
The essence of the problem
The fat under the skin on the arm does not just spoil the aesthetic appearance - it is also a big nuisance. In addition to the fact that the tumor, one way or another, scares people away, it also limits some physical movements and does not allow you to wear some of your favorite clothes. “Thanks to” the appearance of a wen, a person may experience quite serious psychological problems that significantly worsen his lifestyle.
A soft and elastic bulge on the arm, filled with fatty tissue, very noticeable and easily felt, can occur in both women and men - regardless of their age.
Since the generally accepted “measure” of a person’s age and status is the hands, defects and various kinds of skin problems that appear on them can greatly upset their owner.
In medicine, such a tumor is called lipoma . But, despite the slightly threatening name (similar to the definitions of cancerous tumors), this tumor is benign and completely harmless. Lipoma is formed from adipose tissue cells through their pathological division and can occur anywhere in the body.
Types of subcutaneous tumors
The size of the cone, structure, and symptoms determine its name. Photos depict variations.
Atheroma
Atheroma on the inner side of the thigh is a cystic tumor-like compaction. According to statistics, the male population is more susceptible to the occurrence. Increased testosterone plays a role. Benign character.
The reason is blockage of the sebaceous glands. The formation is provoked by a bruise or hip injury. Improper metabolism and hormonal imbalances contribute to the appearance.
- oval, round shape;
- the skin is even in color, there is no redness;
- designated boundaries. You need to feel it to understand what it is. On palpation, a dense formation is felt, like a ball;
- mobile structure, has an unpleasant odor. The contents of atheroma are a substance produced by the sebaceous gland. Curdled consistency;
- interferes with movement;
- can reach 7 cm.
What does a lipoma look like?
The tumor is a small formation, round, mobile and quite soft to the touch, located in a fibrous capsule. Inside, the lipoma looks loose - fat lobules resemble bunches of grapes.
Important: some lipomas are formed without a capsule - in this case, the growth of fat cells can occur in the area of the joints and periosteum, as well as in the muscle layer, which poses a fairly serious threat to human health.
Wen formation often occurs in certain areas of the hand:
- wrist;
- brushes;
- palms;
- on the elbow;
- on the finger of the hand.
In such places, lipoma causes some discomfort and inconvenience. In addition, the tumor cannot be injured - impact on the tumor leads to the activation of pathological fat cells and, accordingly, to the growth of lipoma.
But a person’s body weight does not in any way affect the appearance and growth of a tumor, so losing weight in order to get rid of a wen is not advisable.
Symptoms
As a rule, the tumor is clearly visible even at the initial stage. It has a round shape. If the neoplasm consists exclusively of fat, then it has a loose consistency.
If there is a large amount of connective tissue, the lipoma becomes denser to the touch. The location of dislocation can be very diverse, and the nodes can be multiple or single.
Subcutaneous neoplasm is very easy to recognize. You should pay attention to the following factors:
- formations appear on the back in the form of tubercles, which can be felt quite well upon palpation;
- at the initial stage, the wen is quite soft;
- compaction of a benign tumor indicates the formation of a fibrolipoma;
- when you touch the formation, it seems that the compaction under the skin rolls slightly;
- wen can be of various sizes - from 5 to 50 mm;
- feeling of numbness in localized areas, burning, tingling. This is due to the fact that the lipoma compresses the nerve endings and blood vessels.
If the formation has increased in size, then it poses a great threat to the normal functioning of the body:
- swelling of the affected area occurs;
- the blood supply process is disrupted, which leads to a change in the color of the tumor surface;
- tissue necrosis.
Large lipomas are especially dangerous for people who suffer from diabetes or liver and kidney diseases. After removal of the tumor, the wounds heal poorly, very often ulcers form at the localization sites.
If tumor sites have been noticed, the first step is to contact a surgeon.
With deep lipomas, serious pain occurs in the localized areas and internal organs, on which the tumor puts pressure. In these cases, the patient should quickly consult a doctor for advice and surgery.
Reasons for appearance
Despite the achievements of modern medicine, the reasons why lipomas appear are still not clear. Often the development of a wen is explained by metabolic disorders in the body - both fat, protein, and hormonal. Hereditary factors also play an important role in the appearance of wen . In addition, doctors believe that factors such as:
- stressful situations and some diseases of the gastrointestinal tract;
- endocrinological pathologies and diabetes mellitus;
- stress conditions and nervous system disorders;
- bad habits and unhealthy diet;
- injury to the hypothalamus, a region of the brain that controls the metabolic process throughout the body.
Phytotherapy
Wen is removed using medicinal herbs:
- Kalanchoe - apply a leaf cut lengthwise to the growth.
- Golden mustache - grind the leaves, apply the resulting pulp to the tumor and cover with a bandage, change the compress every 12 hours. Treatment lasts 14 days, then the fatty growth is opened.
- Celandine - brew a strong decoction, soak a piece of gauze in it, apply it to the growth, and wrap it with a bandage. The grass will remove pus from the wen. After this, the formation must be disinfected with hydrogen peroxide and bandaged.
- Aloe – apply the cut leaf with the wet side and secure with a band-aid. When a white, purulent top appears, carefully open the growth with a sterile needle, allow the contents to come out of the wen, disinfect with peroxide, and treat with antibacterial ointment until healing.
- Coltsfoot - a simple compress of leaves draws out pus. Change the dressing every 3 hours.
- Nettle - lipoma scattered throughout the body is treated with tincture of stinging leaves. Place 100 g of crushed raw materials in a liter jar and fill with vodka. Close the lid tightly. Insist for a month. Shake occasionally. Apply compresses until recovery.
- Burdock - a tincture for oral administration is prepared from burdock. Frequent appearance and inflammation of wen indicates the need to cleanse the body from the inside. To prepare the product, burdock root is crushed and poured with vodka. For 250 g of root, 350 ml of vodka is required. The tincture takes a month to prepare. Drink a tablespoon half an hour before meals twice a day. After two weeks, the fatty tissues are reabsorbed.
How to get rid of it?
The choice of treatment methods for fatty tumors is based on the specifics of the tumor, but almost all of them involve removal of the tumor.
In some exceptional cases, the wen is treated with medications, by injecting drugs containing glucocorticosteroids into the tumor - the substances resolve the pathologically formed adipose tissue in the tumor capsule.
But this method is applicable to small wen (up to 2-3 cm). Larger tumors are removed using the following methods:
- radio wave;
- puncture;
- endoscopic and radical therapy;
- or using laser methods .
Treatment with folk remedies
To successfully get rid of a wen, you can also use complex treatment based on traditional medicine methods:
- Some house plants, for example: Kalanchoe and golden mustache, have healing properties. Leaves cut lengthwise are applied to the site of lipoma formation every 10-12 hours until the tumor completely disappears.
- A very effective remedy is a homemade ointment made from garlic with vegetable oil - the mixture must be rubbed into the tumor several times a day.
- Celandine juice has always been one of the best remedies for treating skin pathologies. In case of lipoma, the juice of the plant is used to rub the tumor until it is completely burned out. This method can be alternated with applying a film from a raw chicken egg to the lipoma or compresses from the juice of raw, fairly old onions.
Of course, the methods of getting rid of wen, recommended by the experience of traditional medicine, are really effective, but still, during self-therapy, consultation with a specialist who supervises the pathology clinic is necessary.
Although small, the risk of a lipoma degenerating into an oncological tumor always exists, so it is important to quickly see and recognize the beginning of this process.
Removal
If the chosen treatment method for a lipoma is surgical intervention to remove it, then first of all it is necessary to correctly diagnose the pathological process. Only after determining the type and degree of development of the tumor, the surgeon decides on the choice of method for removing the wen. Typically, radical surgical excision of the tumor is performed in a hospital setting.
The operation is performed under local (rarely general) anesthesia. On the skin, above the neoplasm, the doctor makes a fairly large incision through which the lipoma is “peeled out” along with the fibrous capsule.
Attention: if during the operation the capsule ruptures or a small amount of either the contents of the lipoma or particles of the “sac” remains, then the risk of re-formation of the tumor increases several tens of times. Therefore, it is very important to completely remove the pathology by experienced medical specialists.
After the surgical intervention, the patient remains in hospital conditions for several more days - postoperative therapy and monitoring of the condition of the hand after the operation are carried out, and after this period the person completely returns to his usual lifestyle. A postoperative scar, as a rule, becomes invisible, but there are many cosmetic techniques for its removal.
There are also situations when the wen on the arm bursts on its own - you can squeeze out the contents yourself, making sure to get rid of the capsule.
But still, in such a situation, it is better to consult a doctor, since the consequences of such manipulations often include blood poisoning, infection of the lipoma, or aggravation of the tumor growth process.
And any neoplasm, not only on the hand, but also on any other part of the human body, must first be carefully examined and diagnosed, and only then methods and methods of therapy or removal must be applied.
Is it possible to pierce with a needle
For manipulation for disposal, you will need a needle (preferably medical), sterile wipes and an antiseptic (Chlorhexidine).
Step-by-step instructions on how to pierce a wen:
- Treat the skin of your hands, instruments, and pathology areas with an antiseptic.
- Make a puncture with a needle from the base of the tumor.
- Use a napkin to collect the pus.
- Repeated cleaning of the damaged surface with an antiseptic.
- Applying a bandage. Further care should be carried out as after surgical removal.
Possible complications of self-piercing for disposal:
- infection, the result is inflammation;
- prolonged healing, possible scarring;
- relapses - it is impossible to remove the entire capsule;
- necrosis of damaged tissues.
At home, you cannot get rid of formations that have changed color or shape. It is recommended to contact a medical facility if blood (ichor) is discharged.
Symptoms
Symptoms of a wen on the abdomen may vary somewhat depending on the size of the tumor. In the early stages of formation, lipomas on the abdomen do not cause discomfort or other unpleasant sensations. As they increase, they can compress nerve fibers, causing pain.
As for external signs, the wen on the abdomen has a soft structure and moves freely in the subcutaneous layer upon palpation. The shape of wen, measuring less than ten centimeters in diameter, is characterized by the presence of symmetry. Large lipomas have jagged edges. A feature of all types of tumors on the abdomen is a significant elevation above the surface of the skin.
