The seeds of the castor oil plant, from which castor oil is extracted, are poisonous. People learned about this a long time ago, but did not give up oil extraction. They learned to press the seeds so that all the toxic substances remained in the cake. The first mentions of the medicinal properties of castor oil date back to the 16th century BC. e. Judging by the fact that in ancient times it was widely used throughout the world, castor beans grew on all continents. Or perhaps the seeds were highly prized and sold. While wise doctors were studying castor beans as a cure for internal diseases, women of the ancient world boldly experimented on themselves - at least the Egyptian women did. In ancient times, skin and hair anointed with aromatic mixtures were the privilege of the nobility. The oil was extracted half by hand: first, the seeds were kept under pressure, then boiled or fried at high temperature, covered with salt and squeezed. So beauty used to be expensive. It was then that the technology changed and the product became cheaper. Castor oil today can be obtained in three different ways: cold pressing, hot pressing or solvent extraction.
The oil is obtained from an ornamental plant - castor bean.
What does the oil consist of?
Castor oil is an extract of the castor bean plant. Its composition is considered unique because only this organic oil contains the following substances:
- Ricinoleic acid – the main substance (about 90%) – is a plant acid that has flowing properties, penetrates into tissues and is soluble in ethanol;
- Other fatty acids of plant origin - linoleic, oleic, stearic, palmitic;
- Vitamin E (tocopherol).
There are no other substances in castor oil. This reduces the likelihood of developing an allergy to it, improves the absorption and assimilation of other plant extracts contained in the oil, and enhances the positive effect of this substance on the skin when applied externally.
Types of castor oil
The varieties of castor oil depend on how it was extracted. It could be:
- Cold pressed - this is how most of the oil found on pharmacy shelves is obtained;
- Hot pressed – this oil is considered low quality;
- Boiling or frying is how “black” oil is obtained. This method is easily applicable in everyday life, but the usefulness of the product is extremely doubtful.
Against keratomas
Keratoma is a benign neoplasm on human skin, formed when cells become denser, causing severe discomfort: they itch, peel off, but they should not be scratched or tried to peel off.
To reduce tumors, they can be wiped with warm castor oil. This should be done with soft, gentle movements. Doctors note that this method not only reduces the spread of formations, but also eliminates discomfort.
Thus, castor oil for skin is an excellent natural product that can combat a wide range of problems. It helps achieve beauty, weight loss, and generally improves health. In addition, it has virtually no contraindications or side effects. Doctors and supporters of traditional medicine advise everyone to have a treasured bottle in their home.

Does it really help?
Castor oil has a versatile effect on the body. Its regular use on the skin softens the epidermis due to its oily structure and reduces the activity of skin bacteria. Thanks to the bactericidal effect, another useful property is achieved - the activity of inflammatory processes is reduced and skin regeneration improves. Vitamin E allows the skin to be more elastic and easier to tolerate harmful factors. It cannot completely eliminate wrinkles, but it can smooth out some small folds on the skin and reduce the likelihood of new wrinkles appearing.
User reviews
Women who have used castor oil to smooth out wrinkles, eliminate acne or age spots leave both positive and negative reviews. Some warn that due to the systematic use of this product, the growth of unwanted vegetation has intensified. By the way, the property of activating the hair follicle can be used to improve the condition of eyelashes and eyebrows. To apply oil to eyelashes or eyebrows, you can use a brush from an old mascara, after washing it with running water. Applying the oil daily for ten days will make your eyelashes fuller and your eyebrows thicker. Some users note that this herbal product effectively whitens dark spots on the skin and also evens out its tone.

Factory creams with castor oil: advantages
Cosmetic preparations containing castor oil have a softening, anti-inflammatory and rejuvenating effect. They have two main advantages over using oil in its pure form or as part of homemade masks.
First, natural castor oil has a rather unpleasant appearance, taste and smell. Combination with other means allows you to avoid this drawback. Secondly, home remedies are prepared according to ancient recipes, the reliability and safety of which is subjective. Industrially produced drugs are produced according to quality standards, and the manufacturer is responsible for their safety and effectiveness.
Composition and properties
Leaves and flowers of castor bean
Castor oil is extracted from castor beans using the cold pressing method. Only a product isolated in this way retains useful elements and properties.
Although castor bean is a poisonous plant, when squeezed, all toxic substances remain in the cake. And the liquid itself contains only healing components. The benefits of castor oil for the face are due to:
- Palmitic acid. Accelerates the metabolic processes of the epidermis, promotes better penetration of vitamins into skin cells.
- Stearic acid. Because of it, castor oil has a liquid, viscous consistency. This property can be used to cleanse pores and eliminate blackheads. Stearic acid also has softening and protective effects: it eliminates dryness, tightness, flaking, and prevents the aggressive effects of ultraviolet rays and wind.
- Oleic acid. Restores damaged skin cells, improves intracellular metabolism, and prevents moisture loss.
- Ricinoleic acid. Powerful antibacterial component. Helps cure acne, acne. It also gives the skin softness, elasticity, healthy color, makes it soft and velvety.
- Linoleic acid. Acts as a natural moisturizer and fights flaky spots.
- Vitamins A and E. They are also called “vitamins of youth.” They are the main assistants in the fight against the first signs of aging. Therefore, castor oil is often recommended for the face against wrinkles.
The result will be visible even if castor oil is used a couple of times: cellular processes are normalized, the skin will become healthy, fresh, small rashes and age spots will disappear.
Castor oil in combination with others
Before using castor oil, you should make sure that it will not harm the skin. Oil improves the condition of the skin, and accordingly, its ability to absorb various substances changes. In particular, the use of castor oil in small doses enhances the absorption of other vegetable oils - cosmetic and essential. Therefore, several esters should not be used simultaneously unless such an effect is desired.
In large doses, the opposite effect occurs - the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins slows down.
How to use it correctly?
Castor oil is used for external use. It can be used both in pure form and for the preparation of various compositions. Masks based on castor oil are applied to the skin daily after washing. Before this, the skin must not only be cleaned of dust and secretions, but also disinfected. Can be used together with scrubs to deep cleanse the skin.
Whether or not to wash off a castor oil-based product depends on the specifics of the specific recipe. As a rule, it should be washed off with water without soap, and a moisturizer should be applied to the skin. This is how the best results are achieved.
Some recipes involve applying castor oil to the skin of the face several times a day - this is an intensive recovery course.
Three main "don'ts"
- Apply to damp skin;
- Allow contact with open or bleeding wounds, pimples, scratches;
- Increase the dosage to get better/faster results.
Castor oil without additional ingredients can be used in case of cleansing or whitening the face.
It is advisable to use pure castor oil in extreme cases, when aggressive action is unavoidable. For example, you need to get rid of a wart or skin growth.
Freckles and other age spots should be treated point by point. Periodic lubrication will make them almost invisible.
Subtleties for thin skin
To eliminate bags under the eyes, castor oil is used in special masks and homemade creams. It is great as a base for an anti-aging or nourishing product. To prepare medicinal formulations, a small amount of castor oil is used, to which other vegetable oils are generously added. Castor oil masks can reduce the severity of wrinkles around the eyes and slow down the process of thin skin withering.
They must be applied to the face with extreme caution. For these purposes, you should use a sponge or cotton pad. Under no circumstances should the mask get into your eyes - this will cause severe irritation to the sclera and conjunctiva. It is also advisable not to touch the eyelids in the eyelash growth area.
Against hair loss
To do this, rub the product into the scalp 30 minutes before washing, and to eliminate split ends, castor oil can be applied to the curls. You can also prepare various masks containing castor oil. For example, a mask with egg, cognac. To prepare it, all ingredients are mixed in equal proportions and applied to hair for 20-30 minutes. Wash off thoroughly with warm water and shampoo.
To combat dandruff, a mask of castor and olive oil with the addition of lemon will help. Preparation and application method are similar. How to restore hair with essential oils details here...
How to avoid unpleasant consequences
Castor oil is less demanding on storage conditions than most other herbal formulations. It can be stored for about 5 years (ordinary oils - about 2-3 years), but it must be stored in a dark bottle or in a closed cabinet. Ideal conditions for storing castor oil are in the refrigerator.
Before using the oil, it should be warmed to body temperature or room temperature. The fastest way to do this is to use a water bath - place a container with oil in another container with water and heat it up. Please note that the bottle heats up more than the oil in it. A slower method is to let the oil warm indoors (not in direct sunlight) or hold it in your hands.
Expression wrinkles
For expression lines, a combination of oil and various fruit ingredients is used. Fruits contain vitamin C, and castor oil contains vitamin E, which together have a powerful anitoxidant and regenerating effect on facial skin. Fruits are chosen to compensate for skin imperfections. For example, for dry epidermis you need a banana or melon, for oily epidermis - an apple. Do not use oranges and lemons - the juice may get into your eyes.
The fruit is ground into a pulp, mixed with oil and the lumps are thoroughly kneaded. The result is an ointment for the eyelids , which must be evenly distributed over the skin without rubbing. The mask is left on the face for 15-20 minutes, then washed off with warm water. Be sure to use moisturizer.
For dry skin
Castor oil masks based on egg yolk are perfect for dry skin. For greater effect, you can add cosmetic oils to them - jojoba, jasmine, argan oil. All of them maintain the normal protective layer of the skin and moisturize it. You can also use milk or heavy cream depending on your skin condition. All components must be thoroughly mixed and free of lumps.
The oil mixture is applied to the face and left for 10 minutes. It can be applied to the skin of the face, neck, and décolleté. The mask has a moisturizing and toning effect, nourishes the skin and normalizes the natural production of sebum.
If old age creeps up
overnight are best . The composition may include several oils; a combination of castor oil with peach or sea buckthorn is best. At an advanced age, the skin especially needs nutrition, hydration and protection from harmful influences. The mixture of oils provides exactly this effect and can be used as a homemade night cream.
If your skin is oily, a mask of kiwi and castor oil helps a lot - it eliminates excess fat, improves microcirculation and nourishes the skin. This combined effect allows you to refresh your appearance within a few days of regular use.
Serious problems - deep wrinkles
The mask for deep wrinkles is prepared based on olive oil. This product is indispensable for cosmetic purposes as a base for oil preparations and homemade creams. Other fatty components, including castor oil, dissolve well in it. For greater effect, a combination of castor oil and sea buckthorn oil is ideal.
To prevent the skin from being oily after the mask and creating a feeling of “smearing” on the face, it is best to remove the ointment with a herbal decoction or green tea, and only then rinse with warm water.
Complex anti-wrinkle mask
Aloe juice contains a large amount of vitamins, and castor oil increases the skin's ability to absorb them. Green tea tones and soothes the skin, stimulates blood circulation. This mask allows you to avoid wrinkles if used at a young age, and if wrinkles have already formed, it can improve your complexion and smooth out wrinkles.
The components are mixed in equal proportions, applied to a cotton pad or thin cloth and applied to problem areas of the face. This mask can be left overnight if the patient tolerates such procedures well. If not, you can leave it for 20 minutes, then rinse with warm water.
Get rid of forehead wrinkles
This technique takes time, so it is better to carry out such procedures in the evening after work. Almond and castor oil are used to prepare the mixture. They are mixed together in equal parts, then applied to two napkins. One of them needs to be cooled, the other needs to be heated slightly above body temperature. They are applied to the forehead one at a time, leaving each for 3-5 minutes. The procedure is repeated 5-6 times. Benefit - the skin receives nutrients and restores the protective layer, and blood circulation is stimulated due to the alternation of cold and heat.
Useful washing
Calendula-based washing lotion is effective for aging skin, improving microcirculation and reducing inflammation. It is prepared as follows - calendula flowers are brewed in boiling water, when the broth cools, it needs to be strained, castor oil is added to it, and stirred thoroughly. You can wash your face with the resulting lotion every morning; be sure to shake the solution before applying.
Oily skin is not a problem
Oily skin ages just like dry skin. Moreover, it is characterized by unpleasant symptoms - oily shine, a tendency to acne, and an unpleasant sensation to the touch. Wrinkles on oily skin look rough and sharp, which does not add self-confidence to its owners.
To avoid this, you can use a compress made from nettle infusion and castor oil. It is prepared in a similar way, as indicated in the previous section. To do this, nettle leaves are brewed in boiling water, and oils are added to the cooled broth. Before doing this, be sure to strain it.
The compress is used before going to bed - a cloth is soaked in the solution and kept on the face for some time (about 15 minutes, longer if possible). It is not necessary to wash off the solution.
Instructions for use in cosmetology
Before you start using castor oil for the face, it doesn’t hurt to read the recommendations of cosmetologists and study reviews about the drug in order to insure yourself against potential unpleasant moments.
Instructions for using castor oil:
- The cosmetological use of castor oil is indicated in the following cases: skin - dry, sensitive, fading, problematic, oily, mature; acne, pimples and comedones; pigmentation and freckles; crow's feet and wrinkles.
- Contraindications include: personal intolerance to the drug, allergic manifestations, open wounds.

Safety precautions
According to reviews from cosmetologists , castor oil is relatively safe. An allergic reaction to it is possible, and to prevent it, a special test is required - pure oil or a product based on it is applied to a small area of skin. If no reactions occur within 24 hours, the product can be used without fear. If the skin is red, itchy, or covered in a rash, the ointment should not be used. There are no cases of severe allergies to castor oil, but the manifestations themselves are unpleasant.
The most important rule
Be sure to test any oil, vegetable or essential, for an allergic reaction before use.
Apply a small amount of oil to the inside of your elbow or wrist. Apart from the face, these are the most delicate and sensitive areas on the body.
If a burning sensation or other unpleasant sensation does not appear within 2-3 hours, see how the skin reacts. Rash, redness and other unnatural metamorphoses indicate that this remedy is not suitable for you. Don’t persuade yourself, you can’t fool your body!
